Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - John Richy impressed in his Clearwater Threshers debut on Tuesday, but Clearwater suffered a 2-0 loss to the Daytona Tortugas in the series finale at Bright House Field.

Richy, acquired as part of the Chase Utley trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, hurled seven shutout innings and limited Daytona to just four hits and a walk. The 23-year old right-hander threw 62 of his 90 pitches for strikes.

The Tortugas (35-22) placed a man at third with just one out in the seventh inning, after Junior Arias dropped a bloop single in to center and moved to third on an errant pickoff move by Richy.

The Threshers brought the infield in, and Richy got ahead of Taylor Sparks two strikes before inducing a grounder to second for out number two. Chad Wallach then grounded out to short to end the inning.

Keury Mella (3-1) matched Richy zero-for-zero through those seven frames.

Mella, acquired by Cincinnati as part of the Mike Leake trade with San Francisco at the deadline, kept Clearwater (36-23) off the board on just three hits. He walked four, but struck out six in earning the win.

Daytona broke the scoreless tie in the eighth inning.

Blake Trahan rolled a soft grounder toward first for an infield single to lead off against Yacksel Rios (6-4), and Ty Washington executed a hit-and-run to place men at the corners with nobody out.

Brian O'Grady brought Trahan home, lifting a sacrifice fly to left for the game's first run.

Daytona tacked on a second run in the ninth. Jeff Gelalich walked, stole second, and moved to third on a passed ball, before Sparks knocked him in with a sac fly of his own.

Clearwater took the series two games to one, and after an off day on Wednesday the Threshers will hit the road for a seven-game road swing. Clearwater opens a three-game set at Brevard County on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. with Ricardo Pinto (7-2) on the hill.

The Threshers next home game will be on Fan Appreciation Night on Friday, September 4. The night will feature a Rufus bobblehead giveaway from the movie Dolphin Tale, and a post-game concert by Hunks of Funk.
