Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters pounded out six extra base hits in a 9-2 victory over the Somerset Patriots on Tuesday evening. The win inflates the Skeeters record to 20-25 in the second half and 56-59 overall.

Roy Merritt earned his team-leading seventh win of the season, improving to 7-5 on the year. The southpaw allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work. The Houston native has 12 quality starts in his last 13 outings with the Skeeters.

The Skeeters opened the night with a quick pair of runs in the top of the first. Delwyn Young pulled a two-out double into right field to keep the inning alive. Chris Wallace tied for the Atlantic League lead in home runs with his two-run behemoth to put Sugar Land on top, 2-0. The long ball was his 15th dinger of the year.

Somerset managed to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Robert Andino legged out a one-out single before a five-pitch walk to Aharon Eggleston put the tying run on base. Adam Donachie logged a two-RBI double to knot the game up, but that would be the only blemish on Merritt's superb outing.

Sugar Land hung a crooked number on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Kevin Russo worked a leadoff walk to open the frame, but he would appear to be stranded following back-to-back strikeouts. Amadeo Zazueta laced a single to move Russo to third before Jeff Dominguez singled home a run on his base-knock to right. The Skeeters second baseman would steal his 14th-bag of the season to move into scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Zazueta to cross the plate and increase the lead to 4-2. Travis Scott launched his fifth home run of the season to move the score to 6-2. The long ball from Scott was his fifth of the season and second in his last six games.

The Skeeters inflated the lead to 9-2 in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. Young reached on a two out single before three-straight RBI doubles from Wallace, Johan Limonta and Russo.
