Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Sioux City, IA August 24, 2015- In a season full of tough nights the Gary South Shore RailCats put up a valiant fight Monday night only to suffer a familiar fate in a 5-3 comeback loss to the Sioux City Explorers. Sioux City came in with the league's best record but for most of the night it was the RailCats who were the better club and looked like they might take the opener.

The South Shore took the lead in the second inning off of X's starter John Straka when the Cats got a one out double from Alex Hernandez. Spencer Mahoney then hit a solid ground ball to first that Renee Tosoni had kick off his glove to shallow right to allow Hernandez to come around and score and make it 1-0.

The RailCats added two more in the fourth with Adam Taylor leading off with a single and was followed by Dustin Geiger who doubled. With runners at second and third Alex Hernandez brought Taylor home with a slow roller to third and it was 2-0. Michael Vaughn then split the right center gap with a double and it was 3-0.

Sioux City would start to make their way back in the bottom of the inning off of RailCats starter Charle Rosario. Renee Tosoni drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Brock Kjeldgaard followed with a single to set up the X's up at the corners. Noah Perio Jr. then hit a sac fly to right to allow Tosoni to race home and it was 3-1. Ryan Court then followed with a walk one of a season high seven walks for Rosario. After a fly to right for out number two Rosario then gave up a single to Brandon Slattery to make it 3-2 but retired Brent Keys on a fly to center.

Rosario then worked a 1-2-3 fifth before he dodged a pair of walks in the sixth to keep it 3-2 into the seventh. The seventh the X's finally broke through on the RailCats Rosario. With one out the righty walked the number nine man Brent Keys. The top of the order followed with back to back singles from Matty Johnson and Michael Lang.

With runners at first and second Renee Tosoni hit a single to right to get one run home and an error by Adam Taylor allowed another to come home and it was 4-3. The RailCats intentionally walked Kjeldgaard to load the bases and brought in Shawn O'Neill for Rosario. Perio hit a sac fly to right to give the X's a 5-3 lead and the RailCats never recovered.

Sioux City then pulled Straka after the home half of the seventh and the lead. Straka gave up six hits and allowed three earned runs while walking only one going to (10-2). Straka added eight strike outs in the winning effort. Rob Wort worked a scoreless eighth and ninth for the save (4). The RailCats would get the tying runs aboard in the top of the ninth with two outs but Wort was able to take care of Jon Jones with a ground ball to second to preserve the win.

The RailCats after winning six straight are limping to the finish line losing three of four and are six games back in the American Association Wild Card race. The two clubs will play game two Tuesday at 7:05pm at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City. The game can be hear online starting at 6:45 with WEFM joining in progress. The RailCats will return home Thursday to face the New Jersey Jackals of the CAN-AM League at US Steel Yard.
