Memphis Redbirds News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - After an eight-game homestand that saw the Redbirds go 2-6, Memphis opened their eight-game road trip with an 8-2 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers.

The win keeps the Redbirds five games behind first place Round Rock in the American Southern Division after the Express' victory over Salt Lake earlier on Sunday.

Memphis got the scoring started right away in the first inning on Anthony Garcia's line drive single to center field.

The Redbirds would go on to plate three runs in the second inning after a two-run single from Jacob Wilson and an RBI double from Dan Johnson.

The Rainiers gained the contest's next two runs after a Leury Bonilla RBI single in the bottom of the second and a solo home run from Patrick Kivlehan.

Memphis increased their lead in the sixth inning after a sacrifice fly from Jacob Wilson, his third run batted in on the day.

The Redbirds added more insurance in the seventh on Alex Mejia's RBI double and two-run double from Rafael Ortega.

Eight runs was plenty of support for Memphis starter John Gast. The southpaw recorded his seventh victory of the season on Sunday, tossing seven innings while allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out six Tacoma batters.

Relievers Mitch Harris and Sam Tuivailala spun two shutout innings in releif of Gast to send the Redbirds off winners.

The Redbirds and Rainiers continue their four-game set Monday evening from Cheney Stadium when Nick Greenwood (11-5, 5.14) faces off against Adrian Sampson (1-3, 6.56). First pitch from Tacoma is set for 9:05pm CT.
