Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers fell behind early and never caught up in a 8-2 series-opening loss to the Memphis Redbirds at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.

Tacoma found themselves in an insurmountable 4-0 hole as early as the second inning. Anthony Garcia's RBI single gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead in the first. In the next frame, a two-run single from Jacob Wilson and an RBI double from Dan Johnson upped Memphis' lead to four runs.

The Rainiers first appearance on the scoreboard arrived in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI single from Leury Bonilla. First baseman Patrick Kivlehan narrowed Tacoma's deficit down to 4-2 with a solo home run - his team-leading 18th this season - in the fourth, but Memphis answered with four more unanswered runs to close out the game.

Tacoma tallied a total of four hits in their first meeting with Memphis of 2015. Outside of the run-scoring knocks delivered by Bonilla and Kivlehan, outfielder Stefen Romero doubled and catcher John Hicks recorded a single.

Starter James Paxton (0-1) was dealt the loss in his first Major League rehab assignment with the Rainiers this season. The left-hander tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on two hits and one walk.

The Rainiers (60-69) host the second game of a four-game series with Memphis (65-64) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, August 23. Right-hander Adrian Sampson (1-3, 6.56) is scheduled to start for Tacoma. The Redbirds are expected to start left-hander Nick Greenwood (11-5, 5.14).
