Revs Walk off with Longest Victory in Stadium History

The York Revolution came back from down a run in the bottom of the 14th inning to defeat the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Sunday evening in front of 3,779 fans at Santander Stadium. The Revs avoid a series sweep and stay within 3.5 games of Lancaster for first place, embarking on a three-game series in Lancaster that begins on Monday evening, the final meetings of the season between the two contenders.

After falling behind by a run in the top of the 14th inning, Telvin Nash started the rally in the home half with a double to right off Patriots closer Jon Hunton, the league leader with 30 saves. Nash moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Luis De La Cruz with one out. James Simmons fell behind in the count with two strikes, but with the infield in, lashed a game-tying single down the left field line, before advancing to second when left fielder Ricky Claudio had trouble fielding the ball out of the corner, resulting in an error. Jose Constanza followed with the game-winning hit on a single to left, scoring Simmons for the Revs' club record ninth walk-off victory of the season. Shortstop Robert Andino cut behind Simmons before the pitch, allowing Constanza to roll one through the left side of the infield and into shallow left. Simmons never slowed down, scoring from second on the play.

Somerset had broken a 1-1 stalemate in the top of the 14th with the first run by either team since the sixth inning. Nate Spears took a leadoff walk to start the inning, and after failing to get down a bunt, Jonny Tucker chipped a slow ground ball to short, but both runners were safe when shortstop Wilson Valdez' attempt at a glove flip to second pulled second baseman Eric Patterson off the bag for an error. Reliever Beau Vaughan came back to strike out Jose Garcia who had also failed on a bunt attempt, but a walk to Andino loaded the bases, and Aharon Eggleston cashed in with a sac fly to left for an unearned run, giving Somerset a 2-1 lead. Vaughan (2-1) allowed no further damage, earning the win when York rallied in its half.

Hunton (2-5) suffered the loss, absorbing just his third blown save in his last 22 opportunities.

The Revs scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nash again sparked things by working a leadoff walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by De La Cruz. The same formula worked early in the game, as Simmons launched an RBI double off the left-center fence for a 1-0 lead.

Somerset tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth on a two-out RBI double off the Arch Nemesis by Adam Donachie.

York starter Frank Gailey was outstanding, allowing just one run on four hits over 6.2 innings, while carrying a one-hit shutout into the sixth.

Patriots starter R.J. Seidel matched Gailey, giving up just one run in a season-high six innings while allowing five hits.

The Revs used seven relievers to combine to allow no earned runs over 7.1 innings. It marked the second straight night that York's relief corps logged 7.1 innings of work.

Tony Pena left runners at the corners, relieving Gailey in the seventh to retire Garcia on a one-pitch ground out. Pena then allowed a leadoff infield hit by Andino and a wild pitch to start the eighth in a tie game, but retired the next three at the top of the Somerset lineup.

Mike DeMark and Stephen Penney each retired the side in order in the ninth and tenth innings, respectively.

Edward Paredes dealt with a leadoff walk to Eggleston in the 11th, but left runners at the corners, retiring Claudio on a fly out to shallow left to end the threat.

Josh Judy handled a scoreless 12th inning, before Ron Schreurs came on for the 13th. Schreurs allowed back-to-back singles by Eggleston and Donachie but bounced back with a huge double play grounder from cleanup hitter Michael Burgess. After an intentional walk, Schreurs speared a sharp comebacker from Claudio to complete a scoreless frame and maintain the tie score.

Notes: The extra-inning win was the Revs' seventh of the season, in their record 13th extra-inning game of the year, as both totals added to club records. It was the Revs' fifth extra-inning game in the last 11 contests. At 14 innings, it tied the longest game in ballpark history and set the record for longest victory in stadium history. It is the Revs' second-longest game of the season behind a 15-inning victory at Long Island on May 31. York improves to 12-3 in one-run decisions at home. The Revs also improve to 17-11 in games decided in a team's final at-bat. The two teams had combined to score 44 runs over the first two games of the series before Sunday's tight finale. York lefty Logan Williamson (7-9, 3.64) faces Lancaster southpaw Nate Reed (4-7, 4.25) in Monday's opener at 7 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
