THE LEADOFF: West Virginia defeated Lakewood 4-2 on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. Both starters were stellar with Alex McRae allowing just two hits over seven innings and earned his sixth win of the season in the process. Lakewood's starter Tyler Viza surrendered four runs (one earned) in a complete-game effort. The Power got a run across early in the game on an RBI single from Taylor Gushue in the second and a sac fly from Chase Simpson in the fifth. In the sixth, Jerrick Suiter reached on an error and Tyler Filliben followed with an inside-the-park home run to make it a 4-1 lead. Edgar Santana entered the game in the eighth and picked up his first career SAL save.

OH NO, IT'S THE CLAW: The Power conclude their final series against Lakewood. The Power are 8-5 against the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate this season and secured a winning season against Lakewood with a victory last night. West Virginia leads the all-time series 90-72. West Virginia currently leads Lakewood in the Northern Division standings by eight games.

MAGIC NUMBER DWINDLING: The Power have a magic number of eight heading into play tonight. Any combination of eight Power victories or Lakewood losses will guarantee a postseason berth for the Power. Hickory's elimination number is also at eight though they won the first-half championship. The only team in the league who has been eliminated from postseason contention are the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

IT'S ABOUT TIME: The victory yesterday by the Power propelled the club into first place in the overall standings in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division. The Hickory Crawdads held sole possesion of first place but fell to Greenboro 7-4 last night.

HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING: West Virginia's offense has had at least nine hits in 18 of the 21 games played this month and have the league's best batting average this month at .304. The next closest team is the Savannah Sand Gnats who are hitting .293 this month. Elvis Escobar has the best batting average among everyday starters with a .382 clip. Nine different Power hitters are batting above .300 this month.

UP TOP: Elvis Escobar currently leads the team with a .301 batting average which also ranks eighth in the South Atlantic League. The last player to hit over .300 for West Virginia with enough at bats to win a batting title was Walker Gourley (.304) in 2013. The current batting leader in the league is Asheville's Shane Hoelscher who is hitting .320.

ON TO THE NEXT ONE: The West Virginia Power will unveil their 2016 schedule on Tuesday. Schedule magnets with the match-ups and dates will be given away on August 31.

PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 29: The first 1,000 fans will receive a Bill Mazeroski bobblehead courtesy of AARP and 58 WCHS to celebrate the Pittsburgh Pirates 1960 World Series Championship.

POWER POINTS: The Power have committed 106 errors this season and own the fewest errors in the league this season. The league record for the fewest errors is 107, set by Augusta in the 2013 season over 137 games... The Power have the most wins (43) at home in all of Low-A ball...Tyler Filliben's inside-the-park home run was the second one hit by the Power this season. Jordan Luplow hit one on in game one of the June 14 doubleheader against Augusta...Alex McRae's seven inning performance on Saturday night was the longest in his professional career...The 38 wins by the Power in the second half surpassed the first half total.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Starling Marte hit a walkoff home run to lead the Pirates to a 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Jung Ho Kang added a pair of solo shots in the victory...Tyler Glasnow struck out nine over 6.1 innings to lead Indianapolis to a 6-0 victory over Charlotte...Altoona beat Bowie 12-8 thanks to Jose Osuna's career-high six RBIs including a two-run homer...Bradenton shutout Fort Myers 5-0 as Tyler Eppler went seven strong innings to earn his sixth win of the season...The Black Bears rallied to beat Mahoning Valley 3-1.
