Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Once again, Casey Haerther came through for Winnipeg - this time in a 6-5 victory over the Can-Am League's Ottawa Champions Friday night in front of 3,111 fans at RCGT Park.
With the game tied 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning, Haerther singled to right field to score second baseman James Boddicker from third, and closer Jailen Peguero took the mound in the bottom ninth to seal the 6-5 victory.
With the win, the Goldeyes improve to a 39-45 record and sit six games back of the Laredo Lemurs in the American Association wild card race
The Goldeyes opened the game with an offensive burst. With two outs in the top first, Josh Mazzola hit a three-run homer to score Adam Heisler and Haerther. The Champions responded with a run in the home first, but the Goldeyes soon took a 5-1 lead, thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Reggie Abercrombie and Haerther in the top of the second.
But Ottawa held the Goldeyes scoreless through the next six innings, and the Champions answered with four runs of their own, including one scored when reliever Brad Mincey balked in the bottom sixth to tie the game 5-5 before Haerther singled in the ninth to win the series opener.
Mazzola led the Goldeyes with two hits, three RBI and one run scored, while Haerther went three-for-four with two RBI and one run scored.
Goldeyes starter Kyle Anderson pitched 5 2/3 innings and took a no-decision. Reliever Rett Varner gave up a hit and struck out two in the bottom eighth for the win. Peguero faced four batters and struck out one for the save, and reliever Tyler Wilson suffered the loss for the Champions.
Right-hander Edwin Carl will take the mound for the Goldeyes Saturday at 6 p.m. for the second of this three-game series. The Goldeyes will continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Quebec Capitales, starting Monday night at 6.
The Goldeyes will return home to open an 11-game homestand against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m.
