New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

MANCHESTER - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats made a ninth-inning rally happen Friday night but couldn't overcome the deficit, falling 9-5 to the Binghamton Mets in their series opener at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

New Hampshire (59-62) lost their fourth straight game and didn't score until they were already behind 5-0. The B-Mets (67-55) earned a critical game in their quest to pull away for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.

The B-Mets opened the scoring in the top of the first against Fisher Cats starter Scott Barnes (L, 2-5). LJ Mazzili singled to lead off the frame, and TJ Rivera smashed a double to bring him home. Rivera scooted to third base on a wild pitch by Barnes, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Joe Benson to make it 2-0.

Binghamton added on to their lead in the top of the third inning, as Benson and Brock Peterson knocked consecutive two-out singles. With two outs, Jonathan Galvez hammered a double that plated both runners, advancing the Mets' lead to 4-0. Jared King led off the fifth with a double, and came around on a two-out single by Rivera to extend the advantage to 5-0.

New Hampshire got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Derrick Chung brought home Ryan Schimpf on a sacrifice fly to center field against Mets starter Gabriel Ynoa (W, 9-8). Matt Newman then pounded a double to score K.C. Hobson, trimming the margin to 5-2. Binghamton would answer in the top of the fifth, as Jonathan Galvez crushed a solo homer to left against Barnes to give Binghamton the 6-2 lead.

New Hampshire edged closer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jorge Flores drew a two-out walk, and moved to second on a single from Shane Opitz. Roemon Fields then sliced a single to center to score Flores and cut the deficit to 6-3.

Binghamton made the most of the seventh inning against Fisher Cats reliever Cory Burns. Galvez worked a one-out walk and Xorge Carrillo singled, allowing Jared King to come through with an RBI double and Gilbert Gomez to follow with a two-run single making it 9-3. New Hampshire scored two on a two-out double in the ninth by Chung, but were unable to draw any closer.

Barnes took the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits and fanning five in 4.2 innings. Burns surrendered three runs on four hits and two walks in 2.1 frames, whiffing one. Gregory Infante fired two perfect innings of relief for New Hampshire.

The Fisher Cats will look to snap out of their skid Saturday in a doubleheader against the Mets, with New Hampshire righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx drawing the start in the first half of the twinbill against Binghamton right-hander Tyler Pill. In the nightcap, New Hampshire has lefty Luis Perez scheduled against Binghamton righty Mickey Jannis. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 6:05 p.m., and Tom Gauthier and Charlie Sherman's pregame show begins at 5:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and online at www.NHFisherCats.com.
