Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Visalia, CA - Matt Shelton turned in seven scoreless innings, helping the Quakes earn their eighth shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday night at Recreation Park in Visalia.
Making just his fifth appearance for Rancho in 2015, Shelton (1-1) stepped into the starter's role after originally-scheduled starter Johnathan Richy was dealt to Philadelphia on Wednesday night. He scattered four hits and didn't walk a hitter, fanning six batters in earning his first win of the year.
Alex Verdugo snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth, as he ripped his first homer in a Quakes' uniform to right field, a solo shot off of Visalia starter Brett Shankin (0-1).
The score remained 1-0 until the eighth, when Nate Samson walked and Verdugo followed with a single, setting the stage for Jacob Scavuzzo, who sent a towering blast to left field. The three-run blast, Scavuzzo's tenth in a Quakes' uniform, made it a 4-0 lead against Visalia reliever Hector Hernandez.
The Rancho bullpen was solid on Thursday, as Rob Rogers worked around a two-out hit to record a scoreless eighth. Joe Broussard allowed consecutive men to reach to open the ninth, thanks to an error and a walk, but settled down nicely. Kevin Cron, who finished with two of Visalia's five hits on the night, grounded into a double-play, before Stewart Ijames struck out to end the game.
Rancho (28-25, 69-54) will look to make it two straight over the North Division-leading Visalia Rawhide (33-20, 75-48) on Friday night at 7:00pm, sending Trevor Oaks (0-0) to the mound in his second appearance, against Visalia's Ryan Doran (7-2).
After this current eight-game road trip, the Quakes will return to LoanMart Field on Friday, August 28th, taking on the San Jose Giants in the opening game of a four-game home stand. Friday the 28th is our final Family RV $1 Family Feast, as fans can enjoy hot dogs, Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches throughout the night for just one dollar each. Tickets are available online at rcquakes.com or by calling (909) 481-5000.
