Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga couldn't climb out of an early hole on Wednesday night, dropping a 6-3 contest against High Desert at LoanMart Field in the rubber game of the series.

The Mavericks (29-22, 66-55) took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Quakes in the first inning. Chris Garia reached on an error by second baseman Willie Calhoun and stole second base. Evan Van Hoosier walked against Rancho Cucamonga starter Chase De Jong (3-3), setting up runners at first and second. Garia and Van Hoosier successfully executed a double-steal to get two in scoring position. Royce Bolinger singled to right field, plating Garia and Van Hoosier for a 2-0 lead.

High Desert flexed its muscle in the top of the second inning against De Jong. Tripp Martin clobbered a solo homer to left field. On the very next pitch, Alberto Triunfel went deep off the left field scoreboard for his sixth of the year. The rally continued as Garia reached on another error by Calhoun, then stole second base. Van Hoosier singled to left field, scoring Garia for a 5-0 cushion.

De Jong settled down after that offensive outburst. The right-hander from Long Beach, CA gave up five runs (two earned), five hits and a walk while striking out two over four innings.

The Quakes (27-25, 68-54) used the long ball to get on the board in the bottom of the second against Mavericks' starter Reed Garrett (6-4). Kyle Garlick slugged a solo shot over the right field fence for his third at the High-A level, trimming the deficit to 5-1.

Aside from that blemish, Garrett was fantastic. The right-hander pitched seven innings, allowing one run, two hits and three walks while striking out five. He did not allow a hit between the second and seventh innings and retired the last six batters he faced.

High Desert tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth against Quakes' reliever Josh Sborz. Martin thumped a solo home run over the left field fence for his second of the game and 13th of the season, extending the margin to 6-1.

Rancho Cucamonga had one final flurry in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Dakota Watts. Jacob Scavuzzo reached on a leadoff walk. Paul Hoenecke served a double to left-center field, setting up runners at second and third. Garlick hit a sacrifice fly to right field, chasing Scavuzzo home. Tyler Ogle doubled down the right field line, driving in Hoenecke to make it 6-3.

With the outcome suddenly in doubt, Pat Kaminska entered from the bullpen for the Mavericks, inducing groundouts from Nate Samson and Joey Curletta to end the contest and register his second save of the year.

Rancho Cucamonga's loss drops them two-and-a-half games behind High Desert for first place in the South Division's second-half standings. It also gives the Quakes a losing record against the Mavericks at LoanMart Field in 2015, posting a 6-7 mark.

The Quakes will hit the road for an eight-game road trip, beginning on Thursday night at Visalia. Rancho Cucamonga has yet to announce a starter for that contest, while the Rawhide will send right-hander Ryan Doran (7-2, 3.11 ERA). First pitch at Rawhide Ballpark is scheduled for 7:00 pm. You can follow all the action on FOX Sports 1350 AM, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame Show at 6:45.

The Quakes will return to LoanMart Field on Friday, August 28th, to open a three-game series against San Jose. The series opener against the Giants will be a Family RV $1 Family Feast Night! Enjoy $1 hot dogs, 12-ounce Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches, all thanks to Family RV! It's also Back to School Night, as we celebrate the new school year.
