How Sweep It Is: RiverDogs Win Twinbill to Sweep Away Braves 1-0, 5-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs swept their first series of the season with victories over the Rome Braves in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 5-1 in front of 3,089 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

GAME ONE: Justin Kamplain (4-13) pitched a complete-game shutout, only gave up three hits and earned his first win at home since July 11. He outdueled Sean Furney (6-6) who also pitched a complete game for the Braves (20-31 second half, 51-70 overall) as the RiverDogs (21-30, 55-66) took the first game by a 1-0 score.

After five and a half scoreless innings, the RiverDogs offense put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Vince Conde drew a leadoff walk, and Billy Fleming hit a one-out single two batters later.

With runners on the corners and two outs, Isaias Tejeda delivered with an RBI single to right field. Conde crossed home for Charleston's lone run, and Austin Aune was thrown out trying to score from first.

Kamplain retired the side in order in the top of the seventh. He set down eight straight Braves to finish the first game of the doubleheader.

GAME TWO: Charleston (22-30, 56-66) got on the board early in the second game with three runs in the bottom of the second. Ryan Lindemuth plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to bring home Aune. Radley Haddad followed with a two-out RBI double and then scored on Griff Gordon's single to center.

Rome (20-32, 51-71) cut into the RiverDogs' lead with a run in the top of the third. Luke Dykstra led off the inning with a single and scored two batters later on Stephen Gaylor's RBI infield single.

The RiverDogs added a run of insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Angel Aguilar got on base with a one-out single, and then Fleming and Tejeda hit consecutive two-out singles. Aguilar scored from third on a wild pitch by Felix Marte.

In the bottom of the sixth, Radley Haddad drew a one-out walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Angel Aguilar to increase Charleston's lead to 5-1.

Matt Wotherspoon (4-3) threw a complete-game for the RiverDogs and struck out nine batters. He only allowed one run on six hits in the victory. Alec Grosser (4-5) only lasted two innings and took the loss for the Braves.

The RiverDogs allowed just one run in 23-innings during the three-game sweep of the Rome Braves. It's their first sweep of the 2015 season. Their win streak is up to four games for the first time since they won five straight from April 17-21.

BALLPARK FUN: The RiverDogs teamed up with Keys for Hope for the third HOPE Week initiative of the week. Keys for Hope raises money and awareness for our local homeless shelter, One80 Place. The project engages kids by decorating recycled, painted keys and turning them into little symbols of hope. Players spent the afternoon serving lunch at One80 Place.

Fans stuck around through a 1:10 delay prior to the first pitch of the first game of the doubleheader. Many remained throughout the entire evening and were treated to 14 innings of baseball at The Joe. Military Appreciation Night presented by ISHPI was a success, as many military members and families were in attendance. In the wake of the recent tragedies in Charleston and Chattanooga, the RiverDogs wore Lookouts caps during the second game of the doubleheader. The hats were auctioned off during the game and the proceeds were donated to charity.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs begin a four-game series against Augusta Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Charleston will throw RHP Jordan Foley (3-7, 3.06 ERA), and they will face RHP Mark Reyes (7-5, 2.24 ERA) for the GreenJackets. HOPE Week continues Thursday with the Surfers Healing Folly Beach Camp, the original surf camp for children with autism. Players will be on site at the camp handing out medals to the children who complete their surfing lessons, passing out water, and hanging out with the kids at the beach. This is the final Thirsty Thursday of the 2015 season. Enjoy "Happy Hour" with $1 beers and music in the Ashley View Pub presented by Budweiser. DJ Natty Heavy will once again spin popular tunes throughout the game, presented by 95SX. TOGA...TOGA...TOGA! It's time for a toga party at The Joe on Thursday night! Every Thursday, the RiverDogs pay homage to the standard red Solo cup, everybody's favorite beverage receptacle. During the Seventh Inning Stretch after "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," the Red Solo Cup song will play in the stadium and all fans in attendance will toast to the red Solo cup.
