Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX (August 18, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts have scored three runs in two games during their current series with the Grand Prairie AirHogs. They have won both contests. On Tuesday, the pitching staff made two early runs hold up on their way to recording their third consecutive shutout of the opposition.
Grand Prairie pitcher Brett Wallach (2-7) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning just five days ago against the Nuts, but was not as dominant this evening. Taylor Smart opened the third inning with a sharp groundball inside of third base and into left field that was good for a double. He was bunted to third by Leo Vargas and then thrown out trying to score on a bouncer to third by Jayce Ray. With two outs, David Espinosa singled and T.J. Miitelstaedt worked a walk to load the bases. Wallach tried to go upstairs on Andy LaRoche and ended up missing the mitt of his catcher. The ball caromed to the screen behind the plate and allowed a run to score.
The only other run in the game was scored two innings later. Ray dropped a double among three defenders with one out. He would score when LaRoche singled up the middle for his 10th RBI in eight games to put Wichita (50-32) in front 2-0.
Scott Richmond (4-1) was brilliant from the moment his first inning on the mound began. He retired the first 11 batters Grand Prairie (27-55) sent to the plate against him and struck out six. The former big leaguer stuck around for 6.0 innings and allowed only three base runners during his stay.
Alex Boshers tossed a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth frames. The rookie from Tennessee-Martin struck out three hitters and worked around two hits in his second inning. Paul Smyth allowed two singles in the ninth, but struck out the side to earn his second consecutive save.
The Wingnuts will aim for a sweep in the series finale on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tim Brown will be in search of his 10th win and Grand Prairie will throw RHP Blake Oliver (5-8).
