Daytona Tortugas News Release

Viera, FL - Trailing 5-0 after the first two innings, the Daytona Tortugas (30-19, 67-52) took a 5-1 loss to the Brevard County Manatees (22-27, 51-67) on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

LHP Nick Routt (L, 5-3) ran into some tough luck early and never recovered. The first batter he faced, Omar Garcia, took an 0-2 pitch off his left sleeve and reached first base. Chris McFarland followed with a bloop single to put runners on the corners. Two walks and two sacrifice flies later, it was 2-0 Brevard County.

The Manatees chased Routt from the game with three runs in the second. Jose Pena reached on an error to start the rally, and Steven Halcomb followed with a single to right. After a sacrifice bunt from Garcia, McFarland hit a broken-bat single to left, plating both runners to put Brevard County in front, 4-0. Clint Coulter then drew a walk and Garrett Cooper hit an RBI single to make it 5-0. The Tortugas bullpen took over from there, and did not allow another run.

RHP Scott Brattvet worked around four singles and a walk in 3.2 scoreless innings. RHP Evan Mitchell threw two innings, and LHP Nolan Becker and RHP Jimmy Moran combined to get three outs in the eighth.

Daytona got on the board in the fifth thanks to an RBI single from RF Jeff Gelalich. SS Carlton Daal led off the inning with a single, but was replaced on first after a CF Junior Arias fielder's choice. Arias moved up to second on a passed ball, and scored on Gelalich's liner to right. It was the only run allowed by Brandon Woodruff (W, 3-5), who surrendered just five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Daal had the Tortugas' only two-hit game. LF Phillip Ervin led off the first inning with a double down the left field line, but he was eventually retired on a 6-5-4 fielder's choice, getting caught between second and third on a ground ball.

The five-game series will conclude with a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
