Augusta GreenJackets News Release
AUGUSTA, GA: Heading into Monday's three game series against the Savannah Sand Gnats (71-48) the Augusta GreenJackets (61-58) found themselves in sole possession of the wild card spot in the 2015 SAL playoff chase. The GreenJackets were leading the Greenville Drive and Asheville Tourists by a game and a half. Patrick Young who leads the GreenJackets' pitching staff in wins with eight, took to the mound at Lake Olmstead Stadium to face the first half Southern Division Champs and pitcher Corey Oswalt. After a big fifth inning, the Sand Gnats were able to cruise home to a six to one victory Monday night.
The Sand Gnats jumped out to an early one to zero lead by scoring in the top of the first inning. Eudor Garcia hit a single to center field for the RBI to score Johnathan Johnson. Still down a run in the bottom of the second inning the GreenJackets were looking to even the score with two outs and runners on second and third. Designed hitter Chase Compton hit a towering fly ball that just died at the warning track in right field for the third and final out.
The Sand Gnats exploded for five runs in the top of the third inning to jump out to a six to zero lead. Two walks, three hits, and a GreenJackets error all occurred in front of the GreenJackets crowd. Patrick Young was able to work his way out of the inning but the damage was already done to the GreenJackets. The GreenJackets managed to push a run across the board in the bottom half of the third inning. When Richard Rodriguez hit a RBI single to score Andrew Cain.
Zeroes went up across the scoreboard for the rest of the night, leaving the final score at six to one in favor of the Sand Gnats. Matt Winn and Dylan Davis highlighted the GreenJackets offensively with two hits a piece. Patrick Young (8-3 ERA 3.86) took the loss on just three innings, allowing three earned runs, six hits, and striking out two. Corey Oswalt improves to (10-4 ERA 3.44) with his five innings pitched, seven hits allowed, and striking out five GreenJacket batters.
A loss by the Asheville Tourist allowed the GreenJackets to keep their lead on the Tourists. A win in extra innings by the Greenville Drive cut the GreenJackets lead to the Drive by just a half of a game. Tuesday night, the GreenJackets will be expecting to pack Lake Olmstead Stadium during Richmond County Community night and the SweetWater BOGO Bevs weekly promotion. During the SweetWater BOGO Bevs special, guests can enjoy two for one pricing on draft beers and fountain drinks all night long. The probable pitchers are RHP Chris Johnson and RHP Ricky Knapp during tomorrow night's 7:05pm game.
