Blues force Game 3 by defeating Worcester 1-0

BRISTOL, Conn. - For the first time in league history, the Futures Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series will go to a decisive Game 3.

The Bristol Blues scored in the 1st inning and never looked back, as they defeated the Worcester Bravehearts 1-0 in Game 2 of the series on Saturday night, Aug. 16 on Muzzy Field in Bristol, Connecticut.

Blues center fielder Davis Strong (Saint Mary's / Walnut Creek, California) scored in the 1st inning on a wild pitch from Bravehearts starting pitcher Greg Stagani (West Liberty / Richmond, Ohio). Second baseman Willie Yahn (UConn / Sharon, Connecticut) struck out on the play and was thrown out, but it was too late to stop the run from scoring.

Stagani settled down and pitched five innings with one run on five hits and seven strikeouts.

Blues starter Dominic LoBrutto (Florida International / Winter Springs, Florida) dismantled the Bravehearts' offense, as he tossed eight shutout innings two walks and nine strikeouts.

In the 9th inning, Bristol handed the ball to its closer Robert Paccione (LIU Post / Commack, New York) who collected the save. However, Worcester put up one last fight, as center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale) lead off the inning with a single to center field, and left fielder Joe Caico (New Haven / Hopedale) followed up with a bunt single.

Paccione settled down and forced catcher Alex Sanchez (Galveston / New York, New York) to ground into a double play. With Strom on third base, first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) flied out to right field to end the inning and the game.

The Bravehearts committed three errors and were outhit 7-4 in the loss. Worcester relief pitcher Frankie Moscatiello (Saint Thomas Aquinas / Rocky Point, New York) helped fend off the Blues with five strikeouts in three shutout innings of work.

The Worcester Bravehearts and Bristol Blues will play a winner-take-all Game 3 in the FCBL Championship Series at 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16 in Bristol.
