Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (66-50) bounced back from last night's two-hit defeat with a 3-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (43-70) on Friday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

LHP Amir Garrett (W, 8-6) led the way, throwing seven three-hit shutout innings to pick up a win in his fourth straight decision. He finished his night with a 96 mph fastball, striking out Jared Reaves to end the seventh. Garett punched out five batters and walked just two.

Ranked the No. 9 left-handed pitching prospect in baseball by MLB.com, Garrett has held Florida State League opponents to two runs or fewer in 19 of his 23 starts this season.

Hitting in the six hole for the first time this year, LF Phillip Ervin drove in all three Tortugas runs. Kevin Ziomek (L, 6-10) held Daytona hitless through three innings until SS Carlton Daal led off the fourth with a single to left. After a one-out walk to 3B Taylor Sparks, Ervin ripped a two-run double to the left field wall to put the 'Tugas ahead 2-0.

Sparks drew another walk in the sixth, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single from Ervin to make it 3-0.

Lakeland rallied back with a pair of runs off LHP Seth Varner (H, 2) in the eighth inning, but RHP Jimmy Moran (H, 2) induced a rally-killing double play to keep the Tortugas in front, 3-2.

RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 6) struck out the side in the ninth and lowered his ERA to 3.00.

Daal and Ervin provided all five Tortugas hits. Daal went 3-for-4, and now has five multi-hit games in the last eight days.

The Tortugas have won 11 of 14, and will play for the series win on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with a fireworks spectacular to follow. RHP Keury Mella (1-1, 4.00) is scheduled to make his third start with the Tortugas. Fans can listen to the game on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
