Steamers Claw Grizzlies, Take Series Lead

GASTONIA, NC - The Edenton Steamers cruised past the Gastonia Grizzlies 15-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the Petitt Cup Championship series on Thursday night. Edenton (5-2, 45-17) hung up a postseason-high 15 runs, while Gastonia (4-2, 35-27) tied a season-high for runs allowed.

Zach Prendergast grabbed his first postseason win for the Teal and Black. Prendergast (1-0) hurled six innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking one batter and fanning four.

Michael Royal was charged with the loss for Gastonia. Royal (1-1) lasted 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Grizzlies open the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Jeremy Howell cracked a two-out home run to put Gastonia ahead 1-0.

The Steamers sent 12 batters to the dish in the fourth, blowing the game wide open. Chad Sedio reached on an error in the first at bat, and Tony Rosselli put the Clams on top with a home run to left field. Nick Maguire followed with a single before a walk to Chance Shepard and single from Cole Gruber loaded the bases. Trey Hair singled in a run to continue the rally, and Evan Rogers added a base knock to plate two more runs. Mick Fennell and Sedio polished off the frame with RBI doubles each to give Edenton an 8-1 advantage.

The Clams continued to roll in the sixth inning. After Rogers flew out to left, Russell and Fennell singled and Sedio walked to load the bases. Rosselli and Maguire both singled to plate three runs combined and continue the charge. A two-out single for Gruber finished off the scoring, extending the Steamer lead to 12-2.

Gastonia responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Edenton came back with two more in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on first, Sedio poked a single into right field to put runners on the corners. Rosselli tacked on another single to score Russell, and Maguire drew a walk to load the bases. Shepard drew a second walk to score Sedio and bring the Steamers' lead to 14-3.

The Teal and Black added one more run in the top of ninth. Rosselli singled to start the inning, advancing to second on a passed ball, and Maguire put runners on the corners with another base knock. Shepard cracked a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the next at bat to plate Rosselli and put Edenton up 15-3.
