Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 13, 2014) - Corey Littrell dealt eight scoreless innings to lead the Palm Beach Cardinals to a 1-0 series opening win against the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 2,219.

With a pair of left-handers on the mound, Littrell (7-8) shined a touch brighter than Miracle starter Luke Westphal. Over his eight frames, Littrell faced just three over the minimum and struck out six while scattering five Miracle hits.

Westphal (3-4) was nearly as good. In his longest outing with the Miracle this season, Westphal needed just 79 pitches to navigate seven innings of one-run ball. Striking out five, Westphal did not issue a walk and allowed only four hits.

The Cardinals run came with two outs in the second inning. After retiring Collin Radack and Luke Voit, Westphal surrendered a 1-0 triple to Carson Kelly into the left center gap. Then, after fouling off three consecutive 2-2 pitches, Brett Wiley doubled down the left field line to plate Kelly form third, 1-0.

The Miracle did not put a man past second base against Littrell. Engelb Vielma went 3-for-4 on the night and Mitch Garver extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the seventh.

Josh Lucas recorded a perfect ninth to tally his seventh save of the season.

The Miracle (63-55, 25-23) return to Hammond Stadium on Friday night for the second of a three-game set with the Cardinals (65-61, 33-13). Omar Bencomo (0-1) will make his second start for the Miracle against Daniel Poncedeleon (5-0) for Palm Beach.

Friday night is the finale Dog Daze of Summer at Hammond Stadium. Fans can bring their puppies to the ballpark to enjoy the game. It's also Baseball and Boxing. After the game, the Miracle and SJC Boxing will host exhibition matches on the concourse. Prior to first pitch, fans can meet former heavyweight champion boxers Pinklon Thomas and Tony "TNT" Tucker.

The Killebrew Root Beer Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame will be inducting Luke Wrenn as the 11th member at Hammond Stadium in a ceremony inside of Gate 2 at 6:15 p.m. It's also a Fill'er Up Friday with an $18 All You Can Eat package with unlimited hot dogs, burgers, pasta with marinara sauce, homemade barbecue potato chips, peanuts and ice cold beverages through the sixth inning.
