Round Rock Falters Late, Sky Sox Surge to Take Game One 7-5

Round Rock Express News Release

Round Rock, Texas - Late-inning theatrics caused the Round Rock Express (65-50) to drop the series opener against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (48-66), 7-5. Round Rock's offense was unable to sustain its early momentum and went completely silent over the remaining seven innings.

The E-Train blitzed Colorado Springs starter Zach Davies in the first inning thanks to back-to-back doubles from SS Hanser Alberto and LF Ryan Rua that put Round Rock in front 1-0. 3B Joey Gallo produced the third Express double of the inning, scoring Rua from second with two outs on the board. Davies managed his way out of the inning with a strikeout.

Express starter Francisco Mendoza began his second inning of work with consecutive walks before recording a ground out that placed Sky Sox on the corners. Colorado Springs 3B Matt Dominguez then launched a deep sacrifice fly to center field that supplied the Sky Sox with their first run of the game. Designated hitter and former member of the Express Luis Sardinas connected on the first pitch he saw to keep the pressure on Mendoza with SS Yadiel Rivera stepping to the plate. Rivera spiked a liner into right field to bring the score to 2-2. Round Rock pitching coach Brad Holman made his way out to talk to Mendoza and the righty responded with a ground out to end the top of the second.

Round Rock C Brett Nicholas started the bottom of the third with his 15th double of the season, summoning RF Jared Hoying. Hoying fell victim to Davies' third K of the night, but CF Leonys Martin earned a walk to welcome Alberto into the batter's box. Alberto plugged a force out that allowed him to reach first and move Nicholas to third, but eliminated Martin on his way to second. Rua provided the crushing blow with a homer that nailed the roof of the Dell Diamond center-field shed, breaking the tie and making the score 5-2.

RHP Roman Mendez entered for Mendoza (1-0, 3.35) who went 4.0 innings of work with five hits, two runs (two earned), two walks and one K. Mendez was unable to construct a 1-2-3 inning as Colorado Springs 1B Matt Clark took an 0-2 pitch for a ride to deep right field, inching the Sky Sox within two runs. Mendez recovered with his second strikeout of the inning.

Davies (1-0, 5.40) matched Mendoza in the starting effort with 4.0 innings of work, but surrendered eight hits, five runs (five earned), three walks and three Ks.

The contest turned on a dime with the arrival of Express RHP Ross Ohlendorf who took the reins from southpaw Jimmy Reyes to start the eighth. Ohlendorf began the frame with a walk, but gathered the next two outs in successive order. Colorado Springs then received a single from Clark to put runners on first and second. Sardinas came up next and was immediately impactful as the DH propelled his first homer of the season to put the Sky Sox in front 6-3. Ohlendorf went on to collect a fly out to escape the eighth.

Round Rock went quiet over the final two innings and the Sky Sox padded their lead with a RBI single from C Nevin Ashley, taking game one 7-5.

Round Rock and Colorado Springs continue the series tomorrow night with the first of back-to-back doubleheaders, starting at 5:05 p.m. Express RHP Phil Irwin (1-1, 9.00) takes on Sky Sox RHP Josh Roenicke (6-8, 5.23) in game one, while both pitchers for game two are still to be announced.
