Worcester Bravehearts News Release
WORCESTER - The Worcester Bravehearts continued their strong play in August with a 10-3 win over the Torrington Titans in their final regular season home game of the season on Friday night, Aug. 7 and in front of a stadium record crowd of 4,240 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale) hit a 3RBI triple to empty the bases in the 2nd inning to give the Bravehearts an early 3-0 lead. Strom wasn't finished, as he finished 4-5 with two doubles and was a home run short of a cycle.
Worcester starter Jacob Stevens (Boston College / Darien, Connecticut) was solid in his start, as he tossed five scoreless innings with four hits and eight strikeouts. Stevens worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 1st inning, as he forced a double play to end the inning. Stevens didn't collect a decision, as the Titans rallied for three runs in the 7th inning to tie the game.
However, the Bravehearts offense immediately countered with three runs of their own, starting with a squeeze play by catcher TJ Riccio (New Haven / Port Jeff Station New York). After that, designated hitter Alex Sanchez (Galveston / New York, New York) hit a sacrifice fly, and first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) smacked an RBI double.
Worcester tacked on four insurance runs in the 8th to push the score to 10-3. Torrington reliever and former Bravehearts pitcher Evan DeVico (Post / Waterbury, Connecticut) took the loss, as he surrendered all three go-ahead runs in the 7th inning. Bravehearts reliever Miles Sheehan (Franklin Pierce / Weston, Connecticut) got the win in relief.
In other league action, the Bristol Blues defeated the Pittsfield Suns 3-0, and the Nashua Silver Knights defeated the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs 4-3. As a result the Bravehearts are tied with Wachusett and are currently .5 game ahead of the Suns.
The Worcester Bravehearts will face the Nashua Silver Knights at 7 p.m. Saturday night, Aug. 8 at Holman Stadium in Nashua, New Hampshire and will close out the regular season at 7 p.m. Sunday night, Aug. 9 on Muzzy Field in Bristol, Connecticut.
