Predators Bolster Defense with Two Free Agents

ORLANDO - August 8, 2015 - The Orlando Predators made adjustments to its defensive personnel this week, first announcing the acquisitions of defensive back Brian Smith and defensive end Monte Lewis on Thursday.

Smith (5-11, 180, Virginia Union) was originally assigned to the Predators on May 28, but played in one game before landing on injured reserve. Per AFL transaction procedures, Smith was reassigned from injured reserve on Monday prior to being added to the active roster on Thursday.

Smith played collegiately at Virginia Union University, where he registered 166 tackles with six interceptions, 25 pass breakups, four blocked kicks and two forced fumbles in four seasons as a starter. As a senior in 2012, Smith ranked among the nation's leaders with 12 pass breakups. He also added 42 tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick.

Following his college career, Smith attended rookie minicamp with the New York Jets in 2013. He joined the Portland Thunder for training camp during the team's inaugural season in 2014.

Lewis (6-4, 250, Jacksonville State) totaled 90 tackles with eight sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick during his college career at Jacksonville State, where he earned All-Ohio Valley Conference accolades as a senior in 2011. He signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2012 and later moved on to the Canadian Football League, where he registered two tackles for the Ottawa REDBLACKS in 2014. Lewis also attended training camp with the San Jose SaberCats entering the 2015 AFL season.

Orlando also activated defensive back Arness Ikner from the inactive reserve list on Friday while placing defensive end Meshak Williams on inactive reserve. Ikner has played in five games this season, totaling 29.5 tackles with one interception, three pass breakups and one fumble recovery.
