Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 7-3, in Game 1 of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Northern Division finals at Recreation Field on Thursday night.

With the win, the Mountaineers remain unbeaten in postseason play and will look to sweep the SteepleCats, as the two teams square off in Game 2 of the series at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams on Friday night. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

With the score 3-1 Vermont, the Mountaineers had their big inning in the seventh, pushing across three runs to take a 6-1 lead. Third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) doubled to lead off the frame. Rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) followed with a walk to setup first and second with no outs. Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, but the throw by the third baseman Jim Haley (Upper Derby, Pa. / Penn State) bounced by the second baseman covering first, Hunter Lee (Maitland, Fla. / High Point), and into the Mountaineers bullpen down the right field line. Clemons and Parenty scored on the play to put Vermont up 5-1. Ruppert advanced all the way to third. Three batters later, shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) hit an RBI infield single to score Ruppert and extend the lead to five, at 6-1.

Vermont added a run in the eighth to go up 7-1, and despite surrendering two runs in the ninth, held on for the 7-3 victory.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the third when Parenty walked. He advanced to second on a balk, stole third and scored on an errant throw by SteepleCats' catcher Rob Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y. / Illinois-Chicago). The play made the score 1-0 Vermont.

In the fifth, Parenty connected on a two out solo homerun to right to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 edge.

North Adams responded by cutting the deficit in half, at 2-1, in the top of the sixth. Vermont answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Mountaineers' starter Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Manhattan) was excellent. He dealt six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk. He struck out five. The southpaw earned the win to improve to 1-0 in postseason play.

North Adams starter Robbie Buffis (Lanesboro, Mass. / Alvernia) took the loss to drop to 0-1 in the playoffs. Buffis tossed six innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Vermont closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) picked up the final out in the ninth with the tying run on deck to collect his first save of the postseason, and eleventh of the summer.

Friday night's game two can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
