Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers evened the series with a 9-4 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,004 fans at Hammons Field on Tuesday night.

Cardinals RHP Alex Reyes (L, 0-1) and Drillers LHP Eric Stults (W, 2-2) exchanged a pair of scoreless innings apiece, before Tulsa (17-22, 47-61) cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third. Stults started the third by drawing a walk, followed by a free pass from 2B Ronald Torreyes. A wild pitch advanced both runners ninety feet, before a two-run single from CF Peter Lavin brought both home for the 2-0 lead.

Reyes retired three in a row on a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to end the third with no further damage, before beginning the fourth with a walk. Reyes battled back with a strikeout for the first out in the fourth, striking out four of his final five batters faced before giving way to RHP Corey Baker. Baker worked the Cardinals (20-19, 50-59) out of the fourth unscathed, keeping the Drillers lead at just two runs.

However, Tulsa tacked one more on in the top of the fifth. With one down, 1B Lars Anderson and C Kyle Farmer knocked back-to-back doubles, increasing the Tulsa advantage to 3-0.

The Cardinals, though, broke through against Stults in the bottom of the fifth. 2B Breyvic Valera got the bats going with a leadoff single to start the stanza. One out later, CF Charlie Tilson placed a bunt single perfectly inside the third base line, putting runners at first and second. Following a fly out, RF Anthony Garcia and 1B Jonathan Rodriguez rifled consecutive RBI singles to left field, swinging the Cardinals within just one run of tying it, 3-2.

The Drillers got the run right back in the top of the sixth against RHP Chris Perry. With one away, RF Adam Law singled himself on, before being pinch run for by OF Robbie Garvey. Garvey swiped second base, followed by pinch-hitting RF Yadir Drake being hit by a pitch, putting Drillers at first and second with one down. 2B Ronald Torreyes then knocked an RBI single to center field, bringing in Garvey to make it a 4-2 lead for Tulsa.

The Drillers continued to pad the lead with three more in the eighth and two in the ninth, extending the advantage to 9-2. The Cardinals, though, refused to go down without a fight, attempting a comeback in the bottom of the ninth against LHP Ryan Dennick. 2B Breyvic Valera opened the inning with a sharp single to right field. One out later, Tilson reached on an infield single, advancing Valera to third with only one away. LF Mike O'Neill then skied a fly ball into foul territory in left field, which was caught but was deep enough to score Valera on an RBI sacrifice fly. Tilson remained at first base, but not for long. With two down, Garcia clubbed an RBI doubled to deep center field, scoring Tilson all the way from first to bring Springfield within five runs. However, Dennick battled back with an game-ending fly out to avoid any further damage and close the 9-4 win for Tulsa.
