Aberdeen Wins on Hit Batter in Fourteenth Inning

ABERDEEN, MD-The Connecticut Tigers (20-22) dropped a tough one to the Aberdeen IronBirds (21-22) on Tuesday night by a score of 6-5 in fourteen innings. It was the longest game Connecticut has played this year. The previous long was ten innings on three separate occasions.

With Oswaldo Castillo (1-1) pitching in his third inning of relief in the fourteenth Aberdeen was able to load to the bases with one out. Centerfielder Cedric Mullins walked to start the inning and moved to second when shortstop Ricardo Andujar was hit by a pitch squaring to bunt. The following batter was leftfielder DJ Stewart (2-6) and he laid down a successful sacrifice bunt moving runners to second and third. However, an intentional walk to the following batter loaded the bases. The next batter was first basemen Steve Laurino (1-5, 2 RBI) and he was hit by the first pitch of the at bat forcing in the winning run.

Aberdeen scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead against Connecticut starter Ryan Castellanos. The IronBirds were aided by two errors in the inning and got RBI hits from designated hitter Randy Gassaway (3-5, R, RBI) and Laurino.

The Tigers responded in the fourth inning as they faced the IronBird starter Christin Alvarado. Centerfielder Victor Padron (2-5) started the inning with a walk and scored on a Cam Gibson two-run home run. It was the fifth home run of the year for Gibson. With two outs first basemen Corey Baptist (2-6, 2 RBI) doubled. Leftfielder Jose Zambrano was the next batter and he promptly singled him home tying the score at 3-3.

Connecticut again fell behind this time by a score of 5-3 but again they battled back. In the eighth the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs and on came new pitcher Jay Flaa. With Baptist at the plate Flaa left a fastball over the middle of the dish and Baptist lined it into right field tying the game at 5-5.

Both teams used five pitchers. It was the second straight night that Aberdeen has had to use five pitchers. The win went to Yi-Hsiang Lin (1-0) as he pitched three scoreless innings. Lin struck out three and allowed two hits.

Castillo who took the lose for Connecticut ended up going two and two thirds innings walking three (two intentional), hitting two batters and striking out three. Castillo didn't allow a hit.

Connecticut will play the final game of the three game series at Aberdeen on Wednesday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
