Greeneville Astros News Release

Bluefield, WV - The Greeneville Astros fought until the end, but lost game one of their three-game road series with the Bluefield Blue Jays on Tuesday night by a score of 3-2. The loss drops Greeneville's record to 21-19 on the season and leaves them in a tie with the Johnson City Cardinals for first place in the Appalachian League West.

Yhoan Acosta got the start for the Astros and looked very sharp on the hill through five complete innings. The left-hander allowed just two runs to score, both coming on a Deiferson Barreto home run in the first, while striking out a season-high eight batters.

Acosta was replaced in the sixth inning by Jose Hernandez who put in another solid performance, allowing just one run to score over four innings and striking out four. Hernandez now has 24 strikeouts over seventeen and one-third innings since his first appearance with the Astros on July 10th.

Connor Goedert led Greeneville offensively, going two-for-three at the plate and scoring both of the Astros' runs.

Down 2-0 in the top of the second, Goedert sent a groundball into centerfield for a single to lead off the inning. He was moved to third base on a Brauly Mejia double to center, and came in to score on a Kyle Tucker groundball to second, bringing the score to 2-1.

The Astros tied the ballgame, 2-2, in the top of the ninth inning with their backs against the wall. Goedert drew a walk and advanced to third on a passed ball followed by a Brauly Mejia grounder to second. Arturo Michelena then came through with the clutch base hit to centerfield to bring Goedert home and force the Blue Jays to bat in the bottom of the ninth. However, Bluefield would collect three singles, with the final hit coming off the bat of Freddy Rodriguez with two outs, to score a run and walk-off with a 3-2 victory.

Bluefield reliever Alberto Guzman was credited with the win after pitching one inning and allowing one run on one hit and two walks to go along with one strikeout.

The Astros (21-19) will take on the Blue Jays (18-23) again on Wednesday for game two of the series in Bluefield. Game time is set for 7:05 PM. For more information visit greenevilleastros.com, or call (423) 638-0411.
