Birmingham Barons News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Barons and Smokies took a neck-and-neck contest to the ninth inning Tuesday night before Tennessee was able to claim a 6-5 win and 2-1 lead in the series. Just four innings of the game were scoreless between the two teams.
Despite winning his last five decisions, Mark Blackmar was not his sharpest Tuesday. Blackmar (5-5, 3.48 ERA) allowed six runs on eight hits through six innings. He was out-dueled by left-hander Rob Zastrynzy (1-3, 4.59 ERA) through 6.1 innings. Zastrynzy struck out four Barons and was charged with just three earned runs.
Tennessee jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. The Smokies tacked on three more runs in the sixth via a three-run home run by third baseman Jeimer Candelario. Blackmar exited after the sixth to give way to right-hander Raul Fernandez, who tossed two scoreless innings of one-hit baseball.
First baseman Danny Hayes led the Barons offense with a 3-for-4 night with a double, RBI and two runs scored. A couple of runs in the fourth, and consecutive runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth brought the Barons within one run of Tennessee, but Smokies' closer P.J. Francescon struck out the side to record his 17th save of the year.
ON DECK
The fourth game of the series is set for 6:05 p.m. Wednesday at Smokies Park. Right-hander Frankie Montas is set to take on righty Ryan Williams.
