Wichita Wingnuts News Release

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (August 4, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts fell behind early in their game with the Ottawa Champions on Monday night at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park. They had come back from an early deficit in each of the last three games to emerge with a victory, but on this evening Ottawa ace Andrew Werner was too much. The former San Diego Padres hurler struck out ten over 7.0 innings while limiting the Nuts to one run to help his team win their first game of the series 6-1.

Tim Brown (8-2) had been able to swiftly move through two innings without allowing the Champions to threaten. He also recorded the first two outs in the third inning without any issues. At that point the top two hitters in the lineup, Albert Cartwright and Roberto Ramirez, ripped back-to-back singles to place runners on the corners. Sebastien Boucher followed by smacking a double off the base of the wall in left field to score both and make it 2-0. Mike Schwartz immediately knocked a single of his own to score Boucher and increase the Champions (28-34) lead to 3-0.

After he retired the side in order during a quick bottom of the fourth, Brown allowed three hits and walked a pair in a three-run fifth. Daniel Bick started the inning with a fly ball triple into the right field corner. Cartwright made it on base via a base on balls and promptly stole second. Ramirez drove in two runs with his single and scored a run of his own later in the frame on Bryce Massanari's two-out hit. In the end the Ottawa lead doubled to 6-0.

The Wingnuts (41-27) mustered their only run in the sixth inning. Jayce Ray began the stanza with a double down the line in left. After Werner (9-5) recorded a strikeout, Ray moved to third on a fielder's choice ground out from T.J. Mittelstaedt. Catcher John Nester tallied his 30th RBI of the season with a line drive over the head of the third baseman. Werner struck out multiple hitters in three different innings including the side in the fourth. He allowed one run on six hits.

Nick Purdy finished the game by allowing one hit over two shutout innings in his second appearance of the series. Tyler Heil started the game as the designated hitter for the Wingnuts and later came into the game on the mound. The versatile athlete retired the side in order on eight pitches with two strikeouts.

The Wingnuts will have another chance to take the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. EST. RHP Alex Boshers (1-1) will make his first professional start in the battle against Ottawa RHP Wilmer Font (6-2).
