San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - Jose Reyes carried a shutout into the seventh inning, Christian Arroyo smacked a key two-run homer and Angel Villalona collected three RBI's in a 6-2 San Jose Giants victory over the Stockton Ports on Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium. With the win, the Giants (53-53) took three of four in the series and improved to 13-2 in their last 15 home games.

Reyes (2-4) tossed 6 2/3 innings with two runs (both earned) and five hits allowed to pick-up the win. The right-hander surrendered only two singles over the first six frames.

Villalona (3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) singled twice and doubled to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Arroyo (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) extended his hitting streak to eight games with a fifth-inning home run.

The Giants never trailed in the contest scoring once in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Ryder Jones laced a double into the right field corner and immediately scored when the next batter, Villalona, grounded a single into left.

Meanwhile, Reyes maintained the 1-0 lead until San Jose added to their advantage in the fifth. Reyes faced the minimum 12 hitters over the first four innings. Stockton's only baserunner in the first four frames was a second-inning single from Tyler Marincov, who was promptly erased on a double play.

The Ports threatened in the top of the fifth as Matt Chapman drew a leadoff walk before Yairo Munoz reached on a two-out error to put runners on the corners. Reyes though retired the next batter, Michael Soto, on a groundout to end the inning.

The Giants then pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead. With one out, John Polonius singled up the middle and then stole second. Jeff Arnold was up next and he ripped a double down the left field line to easily score Polonius for a 2-0 advantage. Then with two outs, Arroyo stepped to the plate and belted a 1-0 pitch from Stockton reliever Kyle Finnegan over the fence in left center for a two-run homer. The home run, Arroyo's sixth of the season, made the score 4-0.

In the top of the sixth, Reyes allowed a leadoff single, but used a double play to keep the Ports off the scoreboard. Stockton finally broke through in the top of the seventh. A leadoff single from Jacob Nottingham and a two-out single from B.J. Boyd put runners on first and third. Munoz then smacked a double off the fence in deep left center to score both Nottingham and Boyd trimming the San Jose lead to 4-2. The hit knocked Reyes out of the game, but Tyler Rogers entered from the bullpen and struck out Soto, who represented the potential tying run, to retire the side.

The Giants then got the two runs right back in the bottom of the seventh. Walks to Jeff Kobernus and Jones put runners on first and second and with two outs, Villalona smashed a two-RBI double off the wall in right center for a 6-2 cushion.

Rogers allowed a one-out single in the top of the eighth, but induced the next batter, Melvin Mercedes, to ground into a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. Rogers then breezed through a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the victory.

Rogers was credited with his first save of the year after tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief with one hit allowed, no walks and two strikeouts.

Ports starter Raul Alcantara (0-1) took the loss after pitching the first four innings with one run and three hits surrendered. Finnegan was charged with five runs (all earned) on six hits over 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
