Bullfrogs Win with Five Runs in Seventh
August 2, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- Propelled by a solid all around night of pitching and clutch hitting, the Bullfrogs (38-28) jet streamed to a 6-3 victory over the Growlers (15-51) helped by a five run seventh inning.
Kalamazoo now has the most losses in a single season in Northwoods League history.
Starter Austin Hancock (RHP/Lenoir Rhyne) was hittable, but located extremely well (one walk) as he went 4 1/3IP/7H/1ER against a Growlers team swinging dead red on first pitches throughout.
Kalamazoo scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Justin Fletcher (Northern Illinois) who plated the hot hitting Angelo Armenta (USC).
Armenta was a home run away from the cycle in this game and had five hits in the two-game series.
Trailing 1-0, the Bullfrogs scored their first run in the sixth on two Growlers' errors. Jack Strunc (Washington State) hit a grounder up the middle mishandled by second baseman John Ruiz (Miami) for the first error, and then Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) scored on a throwing error by Armenta (his second in as many games).
In the top of the seventh against starter Alec Byrd (Florida State) the left-hander encountered his first major period of trouble. He let up three consecutive hits to Logan Taylor (Louisville), Robb Paller (Columbia), and Brian Celsi (California) as the Bullfrogs commanded a 2-1 lead.
Still in the 7th, Green Bay's bats stayed focused with a hard hit RBI single from Rosenbaum, followed by a key two-out groundball two-RBI knock from Strunc. Ammons rapped home the fifth run of the inning with another hit up the box.
The Bullfrogs did not relinquish the lead, but Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir Rhyne) allowed two runs including an RBI triple from old Bullfrog, John Soteropulos.
To close things out, Jake Stolley (Northwestern) went 1 1/3IP scoreless, lowering his season ERA to 1.01. He will be featured in the Major League Dreams Showcase in Madison on August 4th.
Matt De La Rosa (1-0) picked up the win, Alec Byrd (0-6) the loss and Jake Stolley (3SV) the save.
Green Bay starts a two-game series tomorrow against the Kenosha Kingfish at 7:05PM CST.
