Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - For the third time in the three game series, the visiting Burlington Bees (14-23, 49-57) scored in the top of the first inning. For the second straight game, the Bees came away with a victory over the Clinton LumberKings (8-29, 34-72). Sunday's 9-3 final continued Clinton's stretch in which the club has not won a series 37 games into the second half.
Lukas Schiraldi (L, 4-9) struggled over 2.2 innings. The righty walked four, gave up five hits, and surrendered four runs, as he remained winless in his last 11 starts. Schiraldi retired the first two men of the game, but gave up three straight extra base hits in the first inning. Steven Mateo's RBI triple made it 1-0, while Wade Wass followed with an RBI double.
Clinton struck for a run in the bottom of the first, but then went scoreless until the eighth inning. Austin Cousino led off the first with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brock Hebert. Burlington starter Michael Bolaski (W, 8-7) allowed just one run and six hits over six innings. Bolaski ended each of the first three innings with a double play, as Clinton matched a season high with three double plays in the game.
Natanael Delgado broke the game open and provided the eventual game-winning hit with a two-out, two-RBI single in the third inning. Delgado's single knocked Schiraldi out of the game, though Osmer Morales did not fare much better. The righty out of the pen allowed three runs, two earned, over three innings.
Down 7-1 entering the eighth inning, Clinton pulled within four against reliever Jason Hoppe. Hebert led off the frame with a single and moved to third base on a double by Estarlyn Morales. Hebert and Morales each scored on an RBI groundout, as Clinton made it 7-3 through eight innings. The hit for Morales was his first in 21 at-bats since he rejoined Clinton last week.
Burlington capped off the scoring and put the game out of reach with a two-run ninth inning against Nick Kiel. Mateo led off the inning with a single, and Wass easily cleared the wall in left-center field, his seventh home run of the season. Jordan Piche pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning that secured a series win for the Bees.
Off of the 2-4 homestand, Clinton will begin its second half Eastern Division trip Tuesday night at West Michigan. First pitch of the opener at Fifth Third Ballpark is set for 6:00 CT. Wednesday and Thursday night's games are also scheduled to begin at 6:00 CT. The LumberKings broadcast for the opener and finale can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, while the middle game will be an internet only broadcast on LumberKings.com.
