Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) scored three unanswered runs to best the Columbus Clippers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. The RailRiders (61-49) earned their 20th win in one-run scores and took the three-game series from the Clippers (60-49). It was the first series win over Columbus for SWB in Moosic since 2006.
Starter Chris Capuano fired four innings, allowing a run on three hits with a no decision. The southpaw struck out four. The comeback gave the victory to Joel De La Cruz (7-0), who allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits over 3.2 innings. Johnny Barbato posted the final four outs for his third save.
Shaun Marcum hurled 5.1 innings in the start for Columbus and limited the RailRiders to two runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Reliever C.C. Lee (2-3) surrendered the deciding two runs, however, over 1.1 innings.
Jose Ramirez jumped on Capuano in the opening frame with a lead-off double and scored on a groundout to second by James Ramsey. The RailRiders tied the score 1-1 in the second when Aaron Judge came around when a pop-up by Cole Figueroa was lost in the sun.
The Clippers reclaimed the lead in the fifth against De La Cruz, plating a pair on three hits and an error.
Greg Bird opened the last of the sixth with a single and raced to third on a double by Judge. Rob Refsnyder flew a sacrifice fly to left. Bird scored to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Tyler Austin sparked the final rally in the seventh by working a walk and swiping second. Ben Gamel bashed a triple to right-center, scoring Austin. It was the 13th three-baser of the year for Gamel, who leads all of MiLB in triples. Jose Pirela completed the comeback with a sacrifice fly to left.
The RailRiders hit the road for six in a row, beginning with a three-game series in Columbus on Tuesday night. First pitch at Huntington Park is set for 7:05 p.m. The Clippers will send out right-hander Will Roberts (2-2, 2.68). A starter for SWB has not been announced. The RailRiders return to PNC Field on Monday, August 10, for Bark in the Park, presented by VREC. For more information please call (570) 969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
