East Texas PumpJacks News Release

Don't let the scoreboard fool you, the Pump Jacks fought hard against the Brazos Valley Bombers on Saturday.

It was just one of those nights.

The East Texas Pump Jacks came out on the wrong side of an 18-0 shutout at the hands of the Brazos Valley Bombers on Saturday night. Brazos Valley threatened in what seemed like every inning while the Pump Jacks ran into bad luck on both sides of the ball.

Mason Mallard was the lone bright spot in the East Texas lineup, going 2-for-3 with a walk. He picked up a single in the first inning, but Brazos starter Mike Walker retired the next seven batters he faced.

Anthony Donovan led off the third inning with a walk and stole second base with Mallard at the plate. The Jacks' best chance to score came when Mallard shot his second single into center field with two outs, but a solid throw beat Donovan to the plate to end the inning.

Walker set the Jacks down in order in the fourth and fifth innings, walked Donovan to lead off the sixth, and retired three more in a row to round out his outing.

The Jacks picked up their third hit off of reliever Nick Jones in the seventh when Hunter Owens shot a two-out single into left, but the inning ended when Franklin Miller grounded out. Short on players, the Pump Jacks were forced to put Miller and Joe Bernhard, two pieces of the starting rotation, into the batting lineup. Miller played left field and Bernhard was slated as the designated hitter.

Mallard reached base for his third time in the game on a walk in the eighth, but the Bombers' Blaze Hastings retired the next four batters to end the game.

Tristen Pendley got the start on the mound for East Texas and pitched 4.1 innings. A five-run rally in the first and an eight-run outburst in the fifth accounted for the majority of the 14 runs charged to Pendley.

Jimmy Johnson struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief, but he was also tagged for four runs. James Lear held the Bombers scoreless over the final two frames, striking out two and allowing no hits.
