HarbourCats Secure Series Win in Wenatchee, Look to Sweep Sunday

Victoria HabourCats News Release

WENATCHEE, Wash. -- The Victoria HarbourCats saw the teams battling them for a playoff spot win games on Saturday -- in particular, Yakima and Corvallis.

The HarbourCats then did their part to keep pace with an 8-6 win over the AppleSox in Wenatchee, the second win in as many times at the home of the AppleSox.

The sweep is in play for Victoria with a game to end the series on Sunday. For Wenatchee, the loss essentially ends the playoff hunt for the AppleSox as the perennial contenders fell to 21-26.

The HarbourCats remain 2.5 games out of the playoff picture but can still help their own destiny. With a record now of 24-22, the HarbourCats have posted 16 wins in their last 22 games.

Starter Josh Walker battled through an early barrage by the tough Wenatchee order, then turned it over to Calvin Christianson, who earned the win for Victoria. Shawn Kennedy posted the save.

A home-run saving catch by Austin Guibor punctuated the ninth inning for the HarbourCats. An error by Scott Jarvis made things interesting, but Victoria closed things out with Kennedy posting a strikeout to end the game in front of 1,285 fans.

A technical problem on the league's stats system prevented the posting of a boxscore to this point.

A five-run third inning propelled the HarbourCats, as did a key triple from Kevin Collard and two RBI hits from second baseman Griffin Andreychuk.

The HarbourCats will send all-star right-hander Dominic Topoozian to the mound on Sunday evening in Wenatchee, then head home to start a homestand against the Yakima Valley Pippins -- the first-ever visit to Victoria by that franchise.

It's Wallace Driving School Fireworks Night on BC Day, with Monday evening's fireworks the only BC Day fireworks in the Victoria area. Gates open at 5:30pm and the first pitch is at 6:35pm, and excitement is building for this series with the playoff implications and great promotions for this series. Harvey's Birthday with Monk Office and Bell Media (CFAX, KOOL-FM, CTV Island) takes place on Tuesday night, and Flight Centres presents Fan Appreciation Day on Wednesday, August 5.
