Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are battling back.

Given up for dead after four straight road losses last week, the Goldeyes went out and won their seventh straight game on Saturday night with a 7-1 drubbing of the one of the teams they're chasing, the Kansas City T-Bones.

Goldeyes starter Coby Cowgill pitched 6 1/3 innings of six-hit baseball, his best outing of the season, as he improved to 3-3 and lowered his earned run average to 4.64. After some early-season struggles, Cowgill is just like the rest of the team. It's August, it's urgent and they are starting to get their collective act together.

"My plan was just to go out there and pound the strike zone," said Cowgill. "My defense tonight was outstanding. The catches that (Adam) Heisler was making in left field were just outstanding. With such great defense behind me, I can just go out there with a lot of confidence to throw strikes."

With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 31-34 and have cut the Kansas City/Joplin lead in the Wild Card race to five games. Joplin was beaten by Gary last night and fell to 35-28. Kansas City is now 34-27.

"This clubhouse is just so much more fun right now," said Cowgill, right after Reggie Abercrombie gave him a shaving cream pie in the face. "The atmosphere in here is just so upbeat now. Reggie's presence has done a lot for this team. He keeps everybody laughing and loose. We've just started playing much better baseball and Reggie's presence has had a lot to do with it."

Kansas City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Goldeyes answered with a bang in the fourth. Casey Haerther led off with a majestic home run to straightaway centre field, his fifth of the season, to tie the game and then Josh Mazzola doubled and went to third on a single by Reggie Abercrombie. Brad Boyer was then hot by a pitch to load the bases and Tillman Pugh singled to score Mazzola. Luis Alen, the player of the game, then singled on a 3-0 count to plate Abercrombie and Boyer and then Casio Grider singled to plate Pugh. In total, the Goldeyes put up a five-spot and they were off to the races.

Winnipeg added a run in the fifth when Abercrombie singled, stole second and went to third on an errant throw by K.C. catcher Brian Erie. He scored on a single by Boyer. With two out in the seventh, the Goldeyes put up another run as Pugh doubled and scored on a single by Alen.

In the end, the Goldeyes scored seven runs on 14 hits, while Kansas City had one run on eight scattered hits. Alen led the way with three singles and three RBI. Abercrombie had three hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Casio Grider had two singles and an RBI and hit the ball hard in all four at bats while Haerther hit that monster home run.

Cowgill (3-3, 4.64 ERA), who was solid right from the opening pitch, got the win, while Kansas City starter Mike Nanninni (1-3, 6.40 ERA) was tagged with the loss.

Cowgill left in the seventh with one out and the bases loaded after K.C. had picked up two infield singles and a hit-batsman. That's when Brad Mincey came on and got the final two outs of the inning. After that, Brendan Lafferty pitched a scoreless eighth and Mike Noteware pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Goldeyes and T-Bones will play Game 2 of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Shaw Park. No starter has yet been announced for Winnipeg, while Bobby Doran (8-2, 4.32 ERA) will take to the mound for Kansas City.
