SWB Game Notes

August 1, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Outfielder Ben Gamel iced a Friday-night thriller on a diving catch of a line drive in left-center as the RailRiders rallied to beat the Columbus Clippers at PNC Field, 3-2. The RailRiders claimed their fourth win in a row while the Clippers have lost three straight.

FULL HOUSE: For the third time in 2015, the RailRiders played in front of a complete sellout crowd of 10,000 fans, surpassing the 2014 total of two complete sellouts. The team needs one more gathering of 10,000 to match the total from the modern/reconstructed PNC Field's inaugural 2013 season (4).

ONE-RUN FUN: The RailRiders improved to 19-12 in one-run games (.613) including wins in four straight single-score games. Those four recent narrow nippings have come over the last nine games played. No other IL team has played .600 or better baseball in one-run games entering today.

QUALITY EFFORT: Starter Kyle Davies settled for a no-decision but logged his sixth quality start over his last seven nods. The lone exception in that time saw him fire five scoreless innings at Indianapolis. Over this seven-start span, Davies has gone 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA, .213 batting average against and 1.07 WHIP. Last night, he allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk over seven innings. He went 2-0 in July with a 1.89 ERA over six starts. He co-leads the team in wins (7), but also shares the lead in losses (6). Part of the reason has been run support. He gets just 3.6 runs/start including a total of nine runs in his six setbacks (1.5/loss).

GAME-WINNING BLAST: Austin Romine caught for the first time since July 17 and hit his first home run since June 30 at Lehigh Valley. His opposite-way shot in the eighth snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be the difference. He told the attending media he believed it was his first home run to right field since 2009. Since he came off the DL on July 26, Romine has gone 4-for-14 with a double and a homer over four games played (.286/.333/.571/.905).

HOT, HOT, HOT: The RailRiders have won nine of 10 and lead the IL North by 3.5 games entering today. Last night's win lifted the team's record to a season-high-tying 12 games above .500. It previously happened after an 8-1 defeat of Louisville on June 24 made SWB 43-31. Before that, SWB had not stood 12 games above .500 since the 2012 SWB Yankees won the division at 84-60.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: The bullpen tossed two more scoreless innings with Branden Pinder (1-3) earning the win, his first since May 11, 2014 versus Durham, while Andrew Bailey notched a save. The 'pen has allowed just two runs (one earned) over its last 28 innings since the July 23 win at Indianapolis. The 'pen owns a collective 2.84 ERA compared to a 3.80 mark for the starting staff.

LEAGUE LEADERS: Multiple RailRiders ranked among the IL's best in July. Batting average: Cole Figueroa (3rd, .367), Jose Pirela (4th, .362). OBP: Pirela (4th, .430), Refsnyder/Figueroa (T-7th, .404). Runs scored: Gamel (T-3rd, 21). Triples: Gamel (T-1st, 4). Wins: Luis Severino (T-1st, 4). ERA: Davies (5th, 1.89), Severino (T-6th, 2.16). WHIP: Severino, (2nd, 0.92). BAA: Severino (1st, .182). The team's .276 batting average trailed only Norfolk (.279) while its 2.65 ERA paced the circuit.

SERIESOUS BIZ: SWB has matched its total of wins against Columbus from last season. The 2014 RailRiders went 1-7 versus the Clippers, getting outscored 79-39. Going back to 2013, the Clippers had claimed 14 straight meetings before SWB won the final 2014 clash, a 5-1 final on Aug. 10 in Moosic. That made for Columbus' longest successful run in series history. It trumped a 12-game domination from June 1, 1993-April 9, 1994 when the then-Red Barons got outscored 97-27.

OFF THE RAILS: Columbus stranded eight men on base and went 1-for-9 with men in scoring position...At 17-12 in July, the RailRiders trailed only Buffalo (19-10) and Norfolk (18-10) for the IL lead in July team wins...SWB has posted a winning July seven times in nine seasons as a Yankees affiliate...Each of the two exceptions saw the club finish one game under .500...After team game No. 108 last night, the RailRiders are through exactly 75% of their 144-game regular season.
