Pigs Fall to Tides in Series Opener, 10-6

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (47-60) dropped their fourth straight with a 10-6 loss to the Norfolk Tides (62-43) on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.

Norfolk took a 7-6 lead with a pair of runs in the seventh as Steve Clevenger and Sean Halton each came through with RBI singles against RHP Nefi Ogando (1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB) who walked and hit a batter to start the inning.

Ogando was tagged with the loss and drops to 1-2 on the season.

LHP Dana Eveland (2.0 IP, H, 2 K) got the win for the Tides to improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Pigs grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Chase d'Arnaud (3-5, 2B, 2 SB, 2 R) doubled to start the inning, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on Brian Bogusevic's RBI groundout.

Norfolk opened up a 3-1 lead with three runs in the third as Henry Urrutia hit a two-run shot off of Pigs starter Jason Berken and Paul Janish came through with an RBI double. It was Urrutia's seventh home run of the season.

In the home half of the same frame, d'Arnaud reached with a one-out single, stole second and scored on Tyler Henson's RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Henson's single extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Lehigh Valley took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth as Erik Kratz tied it with a sac fly and KC Serna (2-4, RBI, SB) gave the Pigs the lead with an RBI single.

In the top of the fifth, Urrutia led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a groundout and scored on Dariel Alvarez's RBI single to tie things at four.

The IronPigs regained the lead at 6-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bogusevic reached via a one-out infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a single and later scored on Cord Phelps' RBI single. Chris McGuiness followed Phelps with an RBI groundout to create the 6-4 advantage.

Norfolk starter Chris Jones (n/d) allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings of work.

Janish's RBI single in the top of the sixth brought the Tides within 6-5. Ogando came on in relief of Berken with Janish at first and two outs in the frame, but was able to get Urrutia to ground to second and end the inning.

Berken (n/d) gave up the five runs on 10 hits while walking one and fanning three in his 5.2 IP.

Christian Walker's two-run shot off of RHP Juan Gutierrez (1.0 IP, H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K) in the top of the eighth gave the Tides a 9-6 lead. It was the 11th home run of the season for Walker.

Julio Borbon's RBI single in the top of the ninth opened up a 10-6 lead for Norfolk.

Aaron Altherr (3-5, 2B, SB, R) also had a multi-hit night for Lehigh Valley.

The Pigs tied a franchise record with five stolen bases which has now been done six times in franchise history.

The series continues on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. as LHP Anthony Vasquez (7-3, 3.73) gets the ball for the IronPigs against a starter yet to be determined for Norfolk.
