Schultz Dominant, Biscuits Force Rubber Match

Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jaime Schultz (6-5) pitched six no-hit innings while striking out nine, and the Biscuits (54-47/20-13) won their second straight game over the Tennessee Smokies (52-50/14-19), beating the Cubs Double-A affiliate 7-4 on Friday night at Riverwalk.

The win was the 24-year-old starter's first since June 14 went the right-hander defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in a 5-2 home victory. Schultz reached his pitch limit after six dominant innings of work, and was replaced in the seventh by reliever Kyle McPherson with the no-hitter still intact. Unfortunately for McPherson though, Willson Contreras would single in the second at-bat of the inning to break up the no-no, and Jeimer Candelario would knock in a run a few batters later to put an end to the shutout.

After being silenced through the first three innings by Smokies starter Ryan Williams (5-2), the Biscuits' bats came alive in the fourth, thanks to a two-run triple by Cameron Seitzer, an RBI-single by Tyler Goeddel, and an RBI-double by Jake Bauers. That made it 4-0 Montgomery, who would add another RBI-double off the bat of Joey Rickard in the 5th. The Biscuits bullpen would bend, but did not break, as Mark Sappington came on to close things out in the ninth to secure victory.

The Biscuits will try to take the series-what would be their seventh straight at home-from the Smokies in the rubber game on Saturday night with Jared Mortensen (6-3) set to tango with Jeffry Antigua (3-3) at 6:35 PM.
