St. Lucie Mets News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets and Clearwater Threshers split their doubleheader at Tradition Field on Friday. The Threshers hung on to win the first game 4-3 while the Mets bounced back to win game 2, 6-2.

In game 2, the Mets exploded for six runs with two outs in the third inning. After Matt Imhoff retired the first two batters, an error on third baseman Mitch Walding on ground ball by Champ Stuart opened the floodgates.

After Yeixon Ruiz followed with a walk, Jeff McNeil lined an RBI single to center. Then Matt Oberste clubbed a three-run homer to put the Mets up 4-0. The Mets added two more runs later in the inning on a bases-loaded walk to Phil Evans and an RBI infield single by Colton Plaia.

That was enough for starter Logan Taylor. He limited the Threshers to two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. The only runs against him came on a two-out, two-run single by Willians Astudillo in the fourth.

Taylor won his fourth straight game to improve to 6-7.

Kyle Regnault pitched final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.

In game 1, the Mets scored a run in the bottom of the seventh but ended up stranding the tying run on second base.

Victor Cruzado led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Evans. Jhoan Urena grounded into a double play to bring in Cruzado to cut the deficit to 4-3. Lednier Ricardo kept the game going with a double but Ulises Joaquin recovered to get Ruiz to pop out to end the game.

Threshers starter Ricardo Pinto limited the Mets to two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings pitched. Joaquin recorded the final four outs to pick up his 14th save.

The Threshers took and an early 2-0 lead on Aaron Brown's two-out, two-run homer off Miller Diaz in the second.

The Mets got a run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Evans.

The Threshers took a 4-1 lead in the fourth on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Diaz in the fourth. With two outs, Diaz spiked a pitch in the dirt that escaped far enough away from Ricardo that Brown was able to score all the way from second.

Diaz was charged with two earned runs in five innings. He tied his season-high with seven strikeouts in the loss.

Evans and Ricardo had two-hit games for the Mets.

The Mets (52-52, 17-17) and Threshers (60-46, 23-13) continue their series on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The first 500 fans through the gates receive a Noah Syndergaard St. Lucie Mets bobblehead. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
