Taylor Rogers struck out eight, and Reynaldo Rodriguez and Chris Herrmann homered to lead the Rochester Red Wings to an 8-3 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Friday night at Frontier Field.

The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., with the Miracle on Ice celebration featuring 1980 Team USA Hockey members John Harrington, Ken Morrow and Mike Ramsey, giveaways, and fireworks after the game; complete promotion details below...

After an easy first inning with two strikeouts by Wings starter Rogers, the Wings mounted a two-out threat against Chiefs starter Paolo Espino. Rodriguez hit a double into the left field corner. Oswaldo Arcia followed with a walk, and that's when Danny Ortiz drilled a two-run double that put the Red Wings ahead 2-0.

The Wings carried their momentum into the second inning. Rogers struck out the first two batters he faced, and forced a ground out to retire his sixth straight batter. Herrmann led off the bottom of the inning by hitting the first pitch he saw out of the park for his first home run of the season.

Rogers struggled a bit in the third inning. After walking Dan Butler to give Syracuse their first baserunner of the night, Rogers allowed three consecutive hits to the Chiefs, including back-to-back RBI singles to Darin Mastroianni and Trea Turner. Rogers was able to gather himself and strike out the final two batters of the inning, keeping the Wings ahead, 3-2.

Rodriguez kept his hot bat going, leading off the bottom half of the third with a solo shot, his 12th of the season. Two batters later, Ortiz earned a walk, and Jose Martinez drove him home with an RBI double. Espino's night came to an end after surrendering the double to Martinez, and was replaced by P.J. Walters. Walters hit Herrmann, the first batter he faced, and gave up an RBI single to Argenis Diaz, extending the Wings' lead to four runs, 6-2.

Espino's night was a short one. Espino (3-5) pitched 2 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs, six hits (all for extra bases), two walks, while striking out two. He threw 64 pitches, 35 for strikes.

Rogers (8-8) had some issues with his control in the fourth, hitting Matt den Dekker to start the inning. Later in the inning, Dan Butler hit a sacrifice fly to score den Dekker. The fourth inning was Rogers' first of the game without a strikeout. He recorded at least two in each of the first three innings.

Herrmann recorded his third hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth, and stole second to put himself into scoring position. Consecutive walks to Diaz and Doug Bernier loaded the bases with one out for the Wings. After striking out Xavier Avery, Walters was replaced by Blake Treinen. James Beresford jumped on Walters' first pitch of the night, hitting a two-RBI single, putting the Wings up 8-3.

Rogers pitches six innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and two walks. Rogers struck out eight and threw 97 pitches, 59 for strikes. Mark Hamburger took over on the mound to start the seventh, and pitched two perfect innings. Aaron Thompson worked the ninth inning for the Wings.

The Red Wings pounded out 13 hits. Rodriguez had two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games, and the homer tied him with Ortiz for the team lead with 12.
