RiverDogs Fail to Score in Twin Bill against Delmarva, Fall 4-0, 2-0

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Charleston RiverDogs were shut out in both games of Friday's doubleheader against the Delmarva Shorebirds, falling 4-0 and getting no-hit in the first game and dropping the second game 2-0 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

GAME ONE: Charleston (12-21 second half, 46-57 overall) did not get a hit against John Means (8-7), the starting pitcher for Delmarva (19-14, 52-49) en route to the 4-0 loss.

Means threw just 78 pitches, 57 of which were strikes in a complete game, seven-inning shutout of the RiverDogs. Bo Thompson was hit by a pitch in the first, walked in the fourth, and Billy Fleming reached on a throwing error by the shortstop Steve Wilkerson. The rest of Charleston's squad was kept off base for the entire game.

After three consecutive second-inning singles, Elier Leyva drove in Delmarva's first run of the game with an RBI knock to left. Jomar Reyes came in to score the second run of the frame on a double play.

The Shorebirds added to their lead on an RBI triple by Cameron Kneeland in the third. T.J. Olesczuk plated Yermin Mercedes with a single to right in the sixth to increase Delmarva's advantage to 4-0.

Matt Wotherspoon (3-2) pitched five innings and struck out eight batters in the loss. Philip Walby came out of the bullpen in relief in the sixth and allowed the fourth Delmarva run on two hits.

GAME TWO: Charleston (12-22, 46-58) scrapped together three singles, but the Shorebirds (20-14, 53-49) shut the R'Dogs out once again 2-0 in the second game of the twinbill.

Justin Kamplain (3-12) pitched six innings in the complete game but picked up his league-high 12th loss of the season. Delmarva plated both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth against Kamplain.

Kneeland led off the inning with a double, and Mercedes followed with an RBI single to put Delmarva in front. The Shorebirds added an extra run of insurance when Reyes followed with an RBI double to center.

Ivan Hernandez (3-0) kept his record perfect on the season, picking up his third win in relief. Garrett Cortright worked around a leadoff single by Thompson in the top of the seventh to set down the RiverDogs and earn his 11th save.
