New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Hector Nelo and the Jackals are back on track. A night after a disappointing 4-2 loss to the Wichita Wingnuts on Wednesday night, the Jackals got even with a 4-1 victory over their interleague rivals, behind six strong innings by starter Anthony Claggett, and Nelo's 16th save of the season.

Like they had the night before the Jackals dominated the Wingnuts early, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead when Anthony Gomez lined a pitch from starter Jason Van Skike up the middle for a base hit to drive in Tony Caldwell with the game's first run of the day.

In the bottom of the fourth, New Jersey tacked onto that lead. Leandro Castro hit his 10th home run of the season to left, putting the Jackals up 2-0. For Castro, the home run ties him for the league lead with Marcus Niddifer of Rockland and A.J. Kirby Jones of the Jackals.

Later in the inning, Matt Helms singled through the hole at second, but an errant throw by the Wingnuts allowed Jamal Austin to come around to score from third base for the second run of the inning. Helms would later score on a sac fly by Tony Caldwell to make it 4-0 Jackals.

Anthony Claggett made the lead stand up. The veteran righty allowed only a Matt Padgett solo home run over six dazzling innings. Claggett kept the Wingnuts guessing all night, as he three batters for his second consecutive win.

The Jackals bullpen was spotless. Alex Powers and Donnie Joseph pitched scoreless innings in relief, before Hector Nelo was called upon in the ninth. Nelo put his recent struggles behind him and retired the same exact hitters he faced on Wednesday night. He jammed Joash Brodin into a pop fly to second; struck out Padgett swinging and struck out John Nester for the final out of the game. Nelo earned his 16th save of the year.

The Jackals (36-26) finish up their series with the Wingnuts on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. ET.
