Simmons' Late Heroics Not Enough as Revs' Winning Streak Is Snapped

July 30, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Down to their final out, James Simmons crushed a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the ninth, but the York Revolution would fall to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-3 on a walk-off home run in the bottom half of the ninth inning, as their season-high five-game winning streak came to a close on Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Denied in their bid for a second straight series sweep, the Revs will continue their road trip to Camden for the first of a four-game series against the Riversharks on Friday evening.

York struck first in Thursday's game, plating a run in the top of the second. Andres Perez reached on a hit by pitch to begin the inning, and with two outs, Salvador Paniagua nailed an RBI double to the gap in left-center. Paniagua became the seventh player in team history to reach the 300-hit plateau in a Revs uniform on the two-base hit.

Revs starter Matt Neil retired his first nine batters faced, but that streak ended when Fred Lewis dropped down a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Lewis advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by Neil, who rebounded to record the first two outs, but a double to right-center by Jake Opitz on a 1-2 pitch brought home Lewis to tie the score at 1-1.

Casey Frawley led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left-center, his fifth of the year and second against York, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-1 lead.

Neil allowed two runs (one earned) on just four hits over six innings, walking none and striking out four.

The Revs loaded the bases after a pair of two-out walks from reliever Orlando Santos in the top of the seventh, but Santos came back to strike out Wilson Valdez, preserving Southern Maryland's one-run lead at the time. The Revs would finish the night 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding nine runners total.

The Blue Crabs tacked on an insurance run in their half of the seventh. Grant Zawadski greeted reliever Luis Perdomo with a first pitch single to left, and with one out, came around to score on Jamar Walton's triple down the right field line, making it a 3-1 game.

Crabs closer Erik Hamren struck out the first two batters in the top of the ninth and was a strike away from finishing the game when Paniagua laced a 3-2 pitch into left-center for a single, keeping the game alive. Simmons followed with a dramatic, no-doubt two-run homer to deep left-center, stunning the home crowd and tying the score at 3-3. The Revs were not finished as Jose Constanza drew a walk and stole second and third base, before Valdez also walked and stole second, but Hamren came back to strike out Bryan Pounds, keeping the game tied.

Zawadski reached on a swinging bunt hit to begin the bottom of the ninth, and took second base as reliever Stephen Penney's throw sailed wide. Jovan Rosa was next and attempted to bunt early in his at-bat. Penney did not get a close call on a 2-2 pitch, pushing the count full. Rosa connected on the next pitch, yanking a line drive walk-off homer down the left field line, giving Southern Maryland the 5-3 victory.

Notes: Penney (3-3) had allowed just one hit and no runs in five innings over his previous five appearances. Neil took his fifth consecutive no-decision, despite allowing no more than three earned runs in any of those starts. The Revs tallied a season-high seven stolen bases, one day after tying a season-best with four steals. It is the second-highest total in a game in club history, behind a nine-steal performance on August 31, 2014 vs. Somerset. Valdez tied a season-high with three steals, one day after notching two stolen bases. Three of York's stolen bases occurred on pitch-outs. Simmons' home run was his first of the season after belting 20 long balls with Bridgeport a year ago. The Revs fall to 11-9 in the second half, slipping two games behind Lancaster for first place. York lefty Rommie Lewis (6-7, 3.66) will face Camden right-hander Sean Gleason (5-9, 4.28) in Friday's matchup at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
