Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Lancaster, PA- July 30, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (13-7, 39-51) were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers (13-7, 41-49) 4-3 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Thursday evening, completing a three-game series sweep for the home team. The Bluefish now head to Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, New York to take on their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks to close out the road trip in a four game weekend wraparound series beginning tomorrow night.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell picked up a no-decision, tossing five and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs (one earned run) on seven hits, walking four, striking out four, and allowing one hone run. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Shunsuke Watanabe also did not factor in the game's final outcome, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, walking two, and striking out four. Pete Andrelczyk (4-2) earned the victory out of the bullpen for the Barnstormers after blowing the save in the ninth inning, giving up one run on two hits, walking one and striking out one. Bluefish reliever Steven Ames (1-1) suffered the loss, facing four batters in one-third of an inning, allowing one run on two hits while walking one batter.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Bluefish cut the deficit in half off Watanabe on a two-out, run-scoring single by John Alonso, bringing home Ethan Chapman, who led off the frame with a base hit of his own, and the 'Fish trailed 2-1. Lancaster regained a two-run edge at 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth off Mitchell with their second unearned run against the All-Star right hander. For the second time in the game Bridgeport got back to within a run at 3-2 off Watanabe in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brandon Jones, plating Sean Burroughs who reached with a leadoff base knock.

The scored remained 3-2 in favor of the Barnstormers as the game moved to the top of the ninth inning. Andrelczyk came out of the Lancaster bullpen in search of his second save in as many nights against the Bluefish, but Bridgeport had other ideas. Bryant Nelson doubled with one out, his third hit of the game and second for extra bases. With the 'Fish down to their final out, John Alonso laced a clean single to centerfield, and third base coach John Harris waved home the speedy Nelson who crossed the plate with the tying run, and we had a brand new baseball game at 3-3. The excitement was short lived for Bridgeport, as Kent Matthes sent the Barnstormers fans home with smiles on their faces with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth off Ames, scoring Zach Collier, and Lancaster made it a perfect seven for seven this season head-to-head against the Bluefish, with each victory coming in their home ballpark. Nelson led the way for Bridgeport with three of the team's 12 hits overall.

Bridgeport now faces the Long Island Ducks tomorrow night as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues at Bethpage Ballpark. 'Fish Play-By-Play broadcaster Mike Mohr will provide audio coverage of each and every game on bridgeportbluefish.com. The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday, August 5th when they welcome in the Lancaster Barnstormers.
