Generals and Sharks Split Double Dip

July 30, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

With each team trying to jockey for favorable position in the Petitt Cup Playoffs, the Wilmington Sharks (27-23) and the Petersburg Generals (25-25) split Wednesday night's twin bill at the Shark Tank.

It took 10 innings for the Generals to overtake the Sharks as they won 6-4 in Game 1 as GK Young's three-run homerun to right-center field proved to be the difference, despite solo homeruns from Alex Destino and Kyle Nowlin. Petersburg scored 2 in the 10th inning, assisted by 2 Sharks errors.

Kevin Boswick shouldered the loss, going 3.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 1 hit, striking out 4 and walking 1. Hunter Smith was given another no-decision after tossing 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 10 hits, striking out 8 and walking none.

Game 2 went much better for the home team, as the Sharks commanded the Generals in a 13-3 victory. The Sharks knocked 15 hits, including a two-run homerun by Andy Austin - his first of the summer. The Sharks scored 10 runs across their final 2 trips - using 6 runs in the fifth and 4 runs in the sixth.

Hayes Nelson was 2-3, Sam Foy went 3-4, and Nick Rotola went 3-4 with 2 doubles and 4RBIs. Rotola stole 3 bases on Wednesday, bringing his season total to 32 and bringing him closer to the top of the league.

In his first start of the summer, Andrew Locklear earned the victory tossing 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits, striking out 6 and walking 3. Locklear's no-hit bid was busted in the fifth inning as Austin Wade connected for a three-run homer.

Holly Springs will slither to town as the Sharks will host the Salamanders for the final Thirsty Thursday of the year, where fans can get $1 draft beers all night long. For more information, call 910-343-5621 or visit www.wilmingtonsharks.com.
