WASHINGTON, PA-The Washington Wild Things played host to the River City Rascals Wednesday evening for a midweek twinbill. The Wild Things were able to come from behind in game one to snatch a 2-1 victory, while the Rascals scored early in game two and never relinquished their lead, eventually holding on for a 6-1 victory. Winning pitchers on the night were Washington's Steve Messner and River City's Lucas Laster.

In game one of the doubleheader the Rascals punched through in the first inning with a solo home run from Taylor Ard. Washington knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when second baseman Matt Ford tripled to score center fielder Danny Poma. Pitching and defense took over from then on, as neither team was able to score until the bottom of the seventh.

For the Wild Things, starter Luke Wilkins allowed just two River City base runners into scoring position after the third inning. For the Rascals, Tim Koons struck out six Wild Things after the game became tied.

The deciding at-bat came in Washington's last trip to the plate. A leadoff double from shortstop Austin Wobrock began the rally, which ended in a Wild Things victory after Ford plated Wobrock with a run-scoring fielder's choice.

In game two, the Rascals wasted no time in attaining a lead, packing on four runs on three hits in the top of the first. Ard added to the River City lead in the top of the third with his second solo home run of the day. A run-scoring double from catcher Jackson Slaid in the top of the fifth added more security to the Rascals' 6-0 lead.

While River City was able to add to their lead, the Washington bats were kept in check by Rascals starter Lucas Laster for a majority of the game. After a two-out single in the first from first baseman Sam Mende, Laster allowed just three base runners for the rest of the game. The Wild Things cracked Laster's luster in the bottom of the seventh when designated hitter David Popkins led off with a triple. A single to center field form Andrew heck ended the shutout bid for Laster, but the five-run lead proved to be enough for the River City hurler to earn his second victory of the season.

Washington will square off against River City again on Thursday, July 30 at CONSOL Energy Park in the series-deciding matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, please visit the Wild Things front office, call 724-250-9555 or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
