Champions Ride Hot Streak into Ottawa, Beat Miners 7-2

Ottawa Champions News Release

Ottawa, ON - Andrew Werner pitched eight innings and Bryce Massanari had two RBIs as the Ottawa Champions handily beat the Sussex County Miners 7-2 on Wednesday night.

The win has the Champions (26-31) keeping pace with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles for the final playoff spot in the Can-Am League. They currently sit one and a half games back of the fourth-place Aigles.

Manager Hal Lanier was impressed with the win. He said that the game would have been a lot closer had it not been for Andrew Werner's impressive play on the mound.

"He's in a good sync and has all his pitches working well. On a hot night too, especially, it was nice to see his effort."

In his lengthy appearance on the mound, Werner struck out five batters. He only allowed one earned run and takes over the lead in a stat category, with the most innings pitched in the Can-Am League (93.0).

While Champions players are used to the hot weather, Lanier said that playing in the heat takes a lot out of any ball club. "You just try to not let anyone get heat exhaustion," he explained. "You want to keep a lot of fluids in (the players) for sure."

"I don't care whether you're used to it or not, playing nine innings in this heat takes a lot out of you."

The Champions got off to a good start early, scoring five of their runs in the first three innings of the ballgame.

Daniel Bick's triple in the second inning cleared the bases and scored two runs. The rookie shortstop led the Champions in the RBI department with three, barely eclipsing Bryce Massanari.

Massanari, a former Colorado Rockies prospect, was able to bring in two runs on two separate occasions. Both of his scoring plays were singles that brought home Sebastien Boucher.

After taking this opening game, Ottawa continues their series against the sixth-place Miners tomorrow night at RCGT Park. Wilmer Font will get the ball for the Champions, as they look to clinch the series win.

The game will start at 7:05 p.m.
