Daytona Tortugas News Release

Port St. Lucie, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (18-13, 55-46) took a rain-shortened win over the St. Lucie Mets (51-51, 16-16) by a final of 7-2 in seven innings on Wednesday at Tradition Field. The game started at 10:30 a.m. ET, and heavy rain came down after a leadoff walk to CF Phillip Ervin in the eighth inning, which started at 1:05 p.m. ET.

Mets starter Scarlyn Reyes struggled in his Florida State League debut, needing 101 pitches to get through 4.2 innings. After stranding two men in the opening frame, Daytona went to work over the next four innings.

1B Chad Wallach led off the second inning with a ground rule double to left center, and scored two batters later when SS Carlton Daal drilled a single through the middle. After a walk to 3B Wendell Soto, he and Daal executed a double steal to put two men in scoring position. LF Jeff Gelalich then beat out an infield single down the first base line to plate Daal from third, giving the Tortugas a 2-0 lead.

They added another in the third, when Sparks was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a Wallach single, and scored on Daal's second RBI base knock. Daytona extended the 3-0 lead with a three-run rally in the fourth.

CF Phillip Ervin was hit by the first pitch of the inning, and quickly stole second. Gelalich laid down a bunt single to first base, putting runners on the corners. 2B Alex Blandino gave Daytona a 4-1 cushion with a sac fly to center, and after a fly out from RF Sebastian Elizalde, Sparks and Wallach came through with two-out hits. Sparks lined a single to right to bring home Gelalich, and Wallach ripped another double to the gap in left center, scoring Sparks to bring the Tortugas lead to 6-1.

Gelalich delivered again in the fifth inning, driving in Ervin with an RBI triple to the right center field wall.

LHP Amir Garret (W, 7-6) worked around four walks and six hits to hold the Mets to a pair of runs in six innings while recording three strikeouts.

Stefan Sabol knocked in both St. Lucie runs. He scratched one across in the third inning with an RBI groundout to first, and plated another with a two-out single in the fifth to bring the Mets within 7-2.

RHP Scott Brattvet tossed two strong innings, allowing just one hit through the sixth and seventh.

Wallach and Gelalich led the way with three hits apiece. Gelalich, batting in the two spot for the first time this season, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a stolen base and a spectacular diving catch in the fifth inning.

The Tortugas salvaged a split in the four-game series and a 4-4 draw in the season series with St. Lucie. The team returns to Daytona Beach for a seven-game homestand at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, starting with a 7:05 p.m. ET matchup with the Fort Myers Miracle. Fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB. Starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
