San Jose Giants News Release

VISALIA, CA - Four Visalia pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and just one run allowed in a 2-1 Rawhide victory over the San Jose Giants on Tuesday evening at Recreation Park. Visalia scored two early runs to take a 2-0 lead and then used dominant pitching to hold off the Giants and even the series. The loss was only San Jose's (50-51) fourth in their last 20 games.

Tyler Horan (2-for-4, RBI, SB) had a pair of singles and drove home the lone Giants run to lead San Jose offensively in defeat.

Giants pitchers - Luis Ysla, Christian Jones and Ian Gardeck - also combined for 16 punchouts in the strikeout-filled game.

The Rawhide scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings against Ysla to move in front 2-0. The San Jose starter retired the first five batters he faced, including four via the strikeout, before running into trouble with two outs in the bottom of the second. Kevin Cron laced a double down the left field line to give Visalia their first baserunner and immediately scored when the next batter, Domingo Leyba, lined a double into deep left.

In the third, Breland Almadova drew a leadoff walk and stole second with one out. Kevin Medrano was up next and he ripped a double into the left field corner plating Almadova to make it 2-0.

Ysla (1-5) suffered the loss despite striking out eight batters over three innings. The left-hander was charged with two runs (both earned) on three hits with two walks during his 74-pitch outing.

Offensively, the Giants managed just two infield singles against Rawhide starter R.J. Hively over the first four innings. San Jose then scored their only run of the night in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Christian Arroyo singled into left and stole second. Horan followed with a line drive single into center to easily score Arroyo cutting the Visalia lead to 2-1. Horan then stole second to put the potential tying run in scoring position, but Hively induced the next hitter, Angel Villalona, to groundout.

Hively (2-2) earned the win after notching nine strikeouts with just one run allowed in six solid innings of work. He surrendered five hits and walked two.

Facing reliever J.R. Bradley, the Giants threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but fell short. With one out, Jeff Arnold blasted a triple high off the wall in left center field. However, Bradley recovered registering back-to-back looking strikeouts of Jeff Kobernus and Arroyo to retire the side and keep the score at 2-1.

In the top of the eighth, Mason McCullough struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 frame. Then in the ninth with closer Nick Sarianides on the mound, pinch-hitter Daniel Carbonell drew a two-out walk, but was stranded when Arnold struck out swinging to end the game. Sarianides was credited with his 18th save of the season.

Jones (3 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 SO) and Gardeck (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) combined for five scoreless innings of relief for San Jose. Jones retired 11 out of the 12 batters he faced before Gardeck entered and set down four hitters in a row.

Notes:

* San Jose out-hit Visalia 6-4. The Giants were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
