Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
NEED TO KNOW: After giving up the lead in the top of the ninth, the resilient Albuquerque Isotopes (47-57) scored four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-6 walk-off victory against the Salt Lake Bees (41-63) Tuesday night at Isotopes Park. After four consecutive singles to begin the inning, Tim Smalling scored the winning run on a passed ball.
THE TURNING POINT: The first eight innings of the game were tightly contested. After Albuquerque jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Tommy Murphy two-out RBI single in the first, Salt Lake took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. The Isotopes and Bees traded runs in the sixth before the Topes were able to tie it at three in the seventh inning on a Brock Bond double. Then the ninth inning provided all the fireworks for the night. Salt Lake plated a trio of runs in the final frame, highlighted by a two-run homer. Kyle Parker, Tommy Murphy, Roger Bernadina and Tim Smalling all recorded four straight singles to begin the ninth and cut the Isotopes deficit to 6-5. Bond then stepped in and picked up his third hit of the night, an RBI single to tie the game at six. With runners on first and third, the second pitch to Rafael Ynoa escaped the catcher, giving Albuquerque a 7-6 victory.
THREE-HIT TRIO: Kyle Parker, Tim Smalling and Brock Bond all turned in three-hit performances. Parker was 3-for-5 with three singles and a run scored as he played his 28th-straight game. Smalling went 3-for-4 with three singles, two runs scored and two RBI. Bond was 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, an RBI and a walk in his first start since June 29.
SEE-YA SIMON: Right-handed reliever Simon Castro tossed three innings of two-hit ball, while striking out seven. He allowed two unearned runs to score and didn't walk a batter. In his last 10 games, Castro has surrendered just one earned run - three total - in 16.2 innings of work for a 0.54 ERA. He has also struck out 23 batters during that time. In total, Albuquerque pitchers struck out a season-high 14 batters.
ON DECK: The Isotopes and Bees will play game two of their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Right-handed pitching prospect Jon Gray (5-6, 4.53 ERA) is scheduled to start for Albuquerque, while Salt Lake is scheduled to send fellow right-hander Nick Tropeano (3-3, 4.43 ERA) to the mound.
IN THE HOLE: Following this eight-game homestand, the Isotopes hit the road for a four-game swing against the Fresno Grizzlies on August 1-4. 20 of Albuquerque's next 28 games are at home.
